With the addition of this 390 Duke, KTM offers a surprisingly complete family, perfectly suited to the discovery of the roadster (125 Duke) to the nasty streetfighter (1290 Superduke R). Much more pot-bellied than the 200 without overshadowing the 690 sportsman, the 390 draws on the clan’s organ bank to build muscle and retain the unique identity of KTM “bad boys”.
125 or 390, the face is the same. Remove the stickers on the side scoops and it will be impossible to tell them apart. The single cylinder, on the other hand, does not train in the same weight room. For only about fifteen kilos more than the smallest of the Duke, this bike unloads no less than 44 horses. Three times the power in a pocket size, it causes. Particularity: this engine delivers a little less watts than the maximum authorized for the A2 license (35 kW – 47.5 hp) … and yet, it will still require a flange. This katoche is too light, and the regulations impose a weight-power ratio – 0.2 Kw per kg – in addition to the max power. Suddenly, in its A2 version, the 390 Duke comes out 41 hp.
As is often the case in Mattighofen, the name is not necessarily synonymous with the exact displacement of the engine. The mono 4 valves, liquid cooling and cubic injection 373.2 cm3. The torque, 3.6 mkg, as the power are rather high perched. A sporty temperament, which sticks well to the nervous plastic of this machine.
Technically, the chassis is very similar to that of the 125/200 torque. Tubular steel frame, dimensions, wheelbase, equipment…. one dress the other. However, the factory informs that the framework has been reinforced, in order to support the 44 Austrian donkeys. ABS, while not as sophisticated as the Adventure’s 9ME, is standard, as is the 43mm inverted fork, 4-piston radial front caliper and emerging market level trim – the little dukes are low cost girls.
Well placed in terms of power and price, the 390 Duke relies on its quirky style and mono to make the difference. Ideal for those who would feel overwhelmed by the virulent 690, the 390 will not be a machine “to handy” either. A sporty single-cylinder is not flexible; and the chassis looks playful. In fact, this Duke is emboldened by a start in character, which is a lot funnier than an easy to access and obvious machine that you tire of in late spring..
