Once the appetite for two-wheelers has been whetted with the 125, the 390 Duke is there to transform the test and introduce the biker to the joys of an intermediate displacement. For this second edition, the roadster announces increasing arguments. KTM is keen on cultivating a family identity, except this time the Duke has pulled out the big fangs.
With the first line of small Dukes (125, 200 and 390), Mattighofen had offered them the vision of the 690. That is to say the roadster which knew how to take the single-cylinder engine towards a side fun / sport / excellent performance. But now the generation is aiming higher, meaner, bolder. And what is most violent about Katoche?!? The 1290 Superduke R. THE sick machine, fitted with a twin which uproots the molars.
So, like the 125, the 390 Duke opted for a design heavily modeled on the big Superduke. Result is a real success. With its visible spine, its incisive face and its taut lines, the design of the bike constantly oscillates between the tenacity of a Superduke and the desire for fun of a toy. But make no mistake. Want to have fun, of course, but like a little road buccaneer.
In addition to its design capable of appealing to young people and lovers of style, the KTM has also been able to evolve so as to intercept A2 licenses more quickly. A tactical weight gain of 10 kilos allows it to be de facto precisely wedged in the legislation – the old one was too light and had to restrain its engine. The 390 Duke now weighs 149 kilograms (10 more). An overweight stuck mainly in the exhaust and the tank. The latter gains 2.4 liters of capacity. Does Mademoiselle Orange take offense at this weight? It doesn’t really matter, because it allows itself to always be in the top-lightness of the category.
Faithful to mono, KTM has only slightly reworked its engine. What offer it a little more flexibility and reduce rejections to align with the Euro4 standard. It does not lose power, the peak still being 44 horsepower; but 500 laps earlier, at 9000 per minute. As a bonus, a pinch of torque is added, 2 Nm.
More pleasant, more rewarding, more ardent, the average Duke has yet other assets, which high-tech enthusiasts will not fail to point out. Appear an electronic ride-by-wire accelerator, LED lights, a color TFT screen with optional minimalist management of the smartphone via Bluetooth, and a Supermoto mode in the ABS. Activated, it keeps the anti-lock lock on the front but leaves the rear brake free. What to afford a few slips and figures of speech once you have a bit of a job in the exercise. The entire ABS can be deactivated at will. If we put aside the sensors and electrical thoughts, braking progresses with a larger disc of 20 mm (320 mm now), still pinched by a radial Bybre caliper.
KTM has also thought about the suspensions, with a new fork, still inverted with a diameter of 43 mm, but lighter and more efficient. For the frame, no change to report. The tubular mesh gives the satisfaction and versatility demanded. Let’s not forget the transplant of adjustable levers, an anti-dribble clutch and new saddles offering a little more space. For the passenger, however, the reception remains at the limit of courtesy.
Very successful redesign for the KTM 390 Duke. The previous one already had enough to attract more than the curious towards the A2 category but here, we are in full operation seduction. The time of the 250/300 is over and we are witnessing the valuation of the 400s. What will provoke the boom in the sector? Maybe not ; but what to give the banana surely.
