The Duke has always been a model of its own in modern motorcycle production. At first with SM tendency, it gradually became a sporty roadster; the only one to be powered by a single cylinder. Sufficiently powerful to come up against twins of equivalent displacement, excuse the little. In this phase 5, or phase 4b depending on whether it is interpreted as an evolution or a new model, the 690 Duke takes another step towards more efficiency..
Evolution one might think if we refer to its look, almost unchanged from the old version. Only the redesigned decorations and seat make it possible to differentiate the versions before and after 2016.
Technically, the 690 Duke brings clear novelties, both in the engine and in the electronics. This time the differences are obvious between two chapters.
KTM is not content to pass the border of Euro4 to this propellant. The block gains in power with 3 horses gained for a total of 73 nags at 8000 rpm, or 500 trs higher than before. The couple is reinforced to 7.6 mkg or 0.4 gained. To obtain this increase in watts, the engine manufacturers modified the internal dimensions of the LC4 unit. The bore is reduced from 102 to 105 mm while the stroke is reduced from 84.5 to 80 mm. Becoming more supercar, the engine takes more turns and will be even sportier in its temperament while offering a wider range of use. We can expect less jolts of character in favor of increased efficiency. Always equipped with a double ignition, the moulbif gains a lighter piston, an injection of 50 mm (46 mm previously), a second balance shaft to calm vibrations and a modified exhaust doubled with a weight saving of 1 kilo.
Equipped with a chassis perfectly in line with its playful and precise side, the Duke takes it up with few modifications. The chrome-molybdenum trellis frame (9 kgs), the swingarm and the rear aluminum buckle (4 kgs each) do not suffer any changes; only a repositioning of the fork is to be noted. The column angle does not change as the trail increases. What offer more stability. The WP suspensions consist of an inverted 43 mm fork and an adjustable preload shock absorber – full adjustable elements are available but only for the R version.
Braking has no criticism to receive. Does a single brake disc seem light to you? The motorcycle is just as much. With 148.5 kilos, it will be a real joke for the 320 mm disc pinched by a Brembo M50 radial 4-piston caliper. For the rear, the 240mm disc is bitten by a single piston.
It seems that the engine is the main subject of the evolutions of this 690 Duke. But Katoche kept some under the elbow for electronics. Make way for a beautiful color TFT screen for your viewing pleasure. There is also a disconnectable ABS and a “Street” driving mode on board. A little fair for you? There is an optional Track pack with 300 balls allowing the motorcycle to regain traction control, two additional driving modes (Rain and Sport), an MSR engine regulation system to avoid locking the rear wheel during heavy downshifts, and Supermoto mode for ABS which deactivates the latter only on the rear wheel. Assists that we find in series on the 690 Duke R.
Having achieved a form of excellence in its field, the KTM 690 Duke can boast of being even more efficient and exhilarating than yesterday while leaving its mark on the clan of mid-size roadsters. There is no one with a mono in the belly, and this one bulges the chest with pride. Overpowered compared to its architecture, it can take 9000 trs (amazing!) While having equipped its entrails to drastically reduce its vibrations. The electronics await the pilot and the chassis will channel the excitement. A mature toy that doesn’t give a damn about conventions. But this type of engine is as much the originality as the eccentricity of this Duke, the market having been dotted for so long with 2, 3 or 4 cylinders..
