KTM and partners are working on electrical concepts
Development of a common electrical platform
KTM, Bajaj and a few other partners have been working on new electrical concepts for some time. In March 2020, a new project called EMotion was launched.
We had already reported in mid-June 2019 that the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer KTM and its Indian partner Bajaj are jointly developing an electrical platform for future models in the power range from 3 to 10 kW. The new EV platform will be based on 48-volt technology and will in future be able to display smaller, purely electrically powered two-wheelers in the scooter, moped and small motorcycles and tricycles segments. According to information from Bajaj, work is already being carried out on a first prototype. A wide range of series production based on this kit is to be rolled out in India in 2022. The upcoming electric models for both brands will then be built in India. In 2019, the Indian government announced plans to make two-wheelers under 150 cc from 2025 and the three-wheeled tuk-tuks emission-free, i.e. electric, from 2023. KTM had already presented an electric scooter as a study in 2013 with the E-Speed concept.
New project started in July 2020
In July 2020 a new project called EMotion was presented, which further illustrates KTM’s increased interest in electromobility. The project, in which a total of eleven partners from industry and science are involved, started in March 2020. The consortium consists of AIT Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH, KTM Technologies GmbH, Kiska GmbH, KTM AG, and WIVW Wurzburger Institute for Transport Sciences GmbH , Salzburg Research Forschungsgesellschaft mbH, FH Upper Austria Research and Development GmbH, Numerica GmbH & Co KG, TU Graz (Institute for Structural Durability and Rail Vehicle Technology), Daxner & Merl GmbH and Kobleder GmbH.

The project was announced for a period of 36 months. The volume was set at 6.3 million euros. The aim of the project is to develop a modular and scalable architecture for electric drive trains and batteries. The focus is on the use of materials that are as light as possible, efficient charging and drive systems and future-proof information systems. With the help of an 8-month field test, the needs of potential customers will also be determined from 2022 and the requirements of electromobility in urban and rural areas will be researched in practice. A first sketch, which was made by Kiska GmbH and can be seen in the lead picture above, should show which direction it could go.
Conclusion
KTM apparently still has big plans in the field of electromobility. The project presented in July 2020 shows a first outlook of the direction in which it could go in the future.
