After the regular PS Cup checker Rene Raub had to pass, Uwe Seitz went into battle with the new KTM 690 Duke R at the Sachsenring.

I thought that was it. The 2011 Le Mans 24-hour race was so intense – what should come next with my modest racing fortune? I had finished running – I thought. In addition, the job, the limited free time, the family … well, every now and then lust flared up. But it didn’t turn out to be more than a few mind games about Christmas. But at least the new one KTM Duke Battle with the most powerful single cylinder in the world also featured in my considerations. But the season came and I stayed in the armchair.

“I can’t, impossible,” said Rene Raub, the PS Cup checker and our man for such cases, fending off the order at the beginning of May to attack at the premiere of the KTM Duke Battle. Reluctant to hear that, but he too has a family. And so began the story at the Sachsenring, at the end of which I unfortunately had to find out that all you need for an emotional high is a race track, a simple motorcycle and a few like-minded people. And unfortunately it’s damn addicting!

Leave the gas in your head against all odds

KTM Duke Battle: Sachsenring

The field of participants in the first season is still manageable. But once word gets around how great the learning and fun factor of the KTM Duke Battle is, there should soon be a few more starters.

The biggest lesson of the 690 battle, however, is that such a feather-light and incredibly manageable bike doesn’t need more than 70 horsepower to really get your hands on. Especially on such a selective route as the Sachsenring, the Mugello Straight or an endless parabolic like in Hockenheim are missing and you can therefore rarely sit on the moderately motorized machine and watch the bees pollinate. More important than performance with this KTM is that you drive with concentration, get the corners right, drive precise lines and let the gas stand in your head against all odds. If you can do that, you can drive 1.36 and 1.37 times here, like the KTM-contaminated Jens Lohnig, Tobias Wedemann or the T-Cup switch Ralf Haas.

But the other guys and the Lady Andrea Stender in the KTM Duke Battle also quickly achieve acceptable times on the first training turns. The heavier cuppies struggle with the uphill section towards the finish line and work on the turning point in the last left, the more cautious want to force themselves next time to simply stay on the gas in the left after the kart track. Everywhere the line is discussed, the gear selection discussed, raved about the handling properties of the 690 and amazed at the pulling power of the potent single cylinder. In front of the times monitor, you praise each other for the next milled second or even two. Group dynamics Brand Cup and racer camaraderie – you can experience them again here.

The wrong strategy for warm-up

Unfortunately, the field of the KTM Duke Battle in the premiere year is still thin. There are various reasons why there are only twelve permanent starters. Perhaps the most important of these are the “meager” 70 hp of the Duke, because too many contemporaries now confuse racing with brutal 200 hp power, which then helps to conceal driving errors in bends on straights. KTM’s late decision to go to the Cup and to tie up the package before the season is a different one. And maybe the total cup price of just under 12,000 euros is frightening, for which there are fine racing parts for the production motorcycle and you should consider that with the crash bars and the construction of the 690s not really much with the usual falls can break.

Axel Knof noticed this on the first day of training when his front wheel folded in at the end of the start / finish, but his KTM didn’t really get anything apart from a few scratches on the protective bars. In contrast to the driver who suffered from a bruised rib on the second day. But who is a real racer … Before the first race everyone cracked the 1.44 minutes. With a training deficit of one day, I started the course, which was new for me, with a 1.45 lap time, lost just under four seconds in three further turns and got better and better at the track and the machine. Unfortunately, I chose the wrong strategy for the KTM Duke Battle warm-up, wanted to save one set of tires of the day for the race and therefore stayed in the pits. Not bad in itself, but if you haven’t practiced a start, it’s really stupid.

The field is still close together, but soon double winners Lohnig (55), Wedemann (85) and Haas (169) storm away.

I then put it neatly in the sand and let the clutch out at a snail’s pace in search of the grinding point. By the time my Duke rolled properly, the field was almost in turn one. The race to catch up was about to begin, and after three laps it was my turn to join the group that had been around my seventh place on the grid. Daniel Pitterle had the best cards. The flyweight from Pforzheim made so many meters on the start / finish and the uphill passage to the paddock that it was able to drive us steadily away. So my debut at the KTM Duke Battle developed into a three-way battle between Markus Soboth, Wolfgang Tausch and me, which Tausch won in the end. Times tumbled again. While winner Lohnig put in a 1.36 lap again, I managed 1.40 minutes.

In race two things went even better. Good start, tough fights, Pitterle couldn’t save the missing kilos any more than Swap his great experience. Only Axel Knof slowed me down with his bruise shortly before the end and pushed me back to sixth despite a 1.38 time. Damn! I only wanted to stand in for Rene at the KTM Duke Battle. But now the racing fever has broken out again. The performance comes from the riding style, no mega power from the bike, which is just stressful anyway! The fights and the special driving style of this Duke – just awesome. How am I supposed to teach this to my wife now?
