Market reports - Slight improvement in the motorcycle and scooter market - Slight improvement in November

The French motorcycle market had a difficult start to 2012, to such an extent that the drop in registrations limited to -2.5% in November seems almost acceptable. Again, the big engines fare better than the 125 cc. Review and analysis.

Slight improvement in November

In November 2012, 8,044 registrations of motorcycles and scooters of 125 cc and above were recorded by the Auxiliary Automobile Association (AAA or 3A). Compared to the volume achieved over the same period in 2011 (8,249 registrations, read our), this represents a slight drop of -2.5%.

In absolute terms, this performance is far from satisfactory, especially when considering the already negative market score a year ago (-9.4%), the fact that the month of November 2012 had one working day. more (21 against 20) and that November 11 fell this year on a Sunday instead of a Friday…

Conversely, we must remember that the weather was even milder last year. Similarly, we can imagine – but no study has shown it – that the holding of the Motorcycle and Scooter Show in Paris Porte de Versailles at the beginning of December had been able to boost the sector at the end of 2011..

What is perfectly clear, however, is that the two-speed operation of the French motorcycle market continues: on the one hand, the 125 cc are declining (-10.2% in November) and on the other the large cubes which form resistance (+ 2.6%).

In the first category, KTM is still in the green and some manufacturers are coming back – finally ?! – with a positive progression, like Piaggio and Peugeot. The three Japanese (Yamaha, Honda and Suzuki) still suffer more than the Taiwanese Sym and Kymco.

In large-displacement – motorcycles and scooters over 125 cc – the situation is less contrasted: except Harley-Davidson (-25%) and the two Japanese leaders this month (Yamaha and Kawasaki with +0 respectively, 6% and -0.5%), the Top 10 manufacturers had a better month of November in 2012 than in 2011.
