The beautiful October weather saves the big cubes … not the 125 cc
The last quarter of 2011 began under very favorable skies for bikers. This is undoubtedly why the French large-engine market recorded an increase of + 9.3% in October. On the other hand, that of the 125 buckles at -15.5%… Balance sheet.
Favorable weather conditions for large engines
The back-to-school climate reports follow one another and are similar: "Following on from September, this month of October 2011 was generally hot and dry", indicates Meteo France before specifying that with"an overall rainfall deficit of 45%, this month is among the driest October of the last 50 years, without being exceptional".
However, if the pretty month of September had not benefited much to French motorcycle sellers (read our), that of October turned out to be more fruitful … for those who had the right products, obviously !
To begin with, we note that within the 125 cc sector (-15.5% as a whole), only the KTM dealers have rubbed their hands. The others, whether Japanese, Italian, Taiwanese or Korean, have kept them more in their pockets….
Because while the Austrians were busy delivering their mini Duke by the dozen and ultimately signed an unusual + 282% (!), Piaggio, Suzuki, Daelim and MBK saw their sales fall by around a quarter. Honda (-9.2%) and Kymco (-6.3%) saved the furniture by grabbing some market pats, while Peugeot slightly improved its score (+ 2.6%).
On the large-displacement side, despite particularly uneven results, the average is quite satisfactory: + 9.3% increase compared to October 2010 (read our), or almost 7,000 units registered in November 2011.
The mild temperatures and the absence of rain (except for a few impressive episodes in Brittany and in the South-West) therefore made the bikers leave! In absolute value, we notice the presence of Harley Davidson ahead of BMW and Suzuki, thanks to the arrival of the "new models".
Like Yamaha (+ 28%) still in the lead, BMW (+ 33.4%) achieved very good progress in October, as did Honda (+ 12.8%) and KTM (+17, 3%). More timid this month, Kawasaki (+ 8.7%) nevertheless retains its market share from October 2010.
Finally, Triumph and Ducati end this 10th month with disappointing declines (-20% and -10% respectively), but we are more worried about Suzuki (-10%) because unlike the two European manufacturers, the Japanese brand has been declining since beginning of the year…
