Market reports - October 2005 motorcycle market: leaders under threat! -

The 125 market is in good shape with an increase of 11.3%, in particular thanks to Piaggio and Yamaha. But what the tuning forks brand wins in this sector, it loses in the large-displacement sector where only Kawasaki and Triumph are making progress.. Balance sheet.

The end of the season is off to a good start for the 125s with an increase of 11.3% in October, but it is less conducive to large engines which show a decrease of 7.7%..

Small-displacement side, Piaggio went to the top of sales ahead of Honda and Yamaha. Exotic brands continue to explode their numbers, while remaining in reduced volumes.

Among the big cubes, only Kawasaki and Triumph keep a smile while all the others show declining results, even in free fall for the leader Yamaha, who even sees Suzuki beat him in October.

Market 125

The 125 market continued its good comeback with a sales volume up 11.3% compared to October 2004. But in this highly competitive market, not everyone is in the same boat: while some brands contribute very largely to this slight increase, others are nosy.

The increase in sales volume is in fact mainly due to the very good figures from Yamaha (+ 33%) and Piaggio (+ 12.2%), which are ahead of Honda for this month of October 2005. Cumulative since January, Piaggio even takes the lead with 16,551 vehicles sold against 16,381 for Honda.

With 3,240 vehicles sold in October, Yamaha and Piaggio together account for over 45% of last month’s 125cc sales. Even if in absolute value Aprilia and Peugeot do not claim to compete with these two new leaders, they still make good progress compared to last year (+ 16.4% and + 12.8% respectively).

At the bottom of the table, Sym and Daelim continue their meteoric rise (+ 154.3% and 225.5%) and could even threaten Suzuki and Kymco by the end of the year !

At the top 10 sales, the Yamaha Majesty is not content only to beat the Piaggio X8 for the month of October, but also doubles it in the cumulative 10 months. And Yamaha keeps the pressure on Piaggio who sees his X9 again threatened by the small YBR which has already sold 410 copies.

To resist these two Yamaha as well as the next Xmax (read), the Italian brand can however count on its novelty: the LX – "Light" version of the legendary PX -, which makes a remarkable entry on the sixth place of the monthly ranking.

The only big fall of the month: Suzuki’s little Burgman which only sold 86 copies last month against 333 in September, the fault of a shortage of stock and a "relatively low production capacity of factories"regretted by Pierre Laurent Feriti, Head of Communication at Suzuki France.

Market over 125

With a 7.7% drop in sales volume, October 2005 was less good than 2004. A drop that affects all manufacturers, except Kawasaki and Triumph…

The Z750 indeed continues its rider alone and offers third place in the October ranking to Kawasaki, the only Japanese brand to see its sales increase compared to last year (+ 37%). The ER-6n (read), which does not yet appear in the rankings, is certainly no stranger to this good result of the Greens !

The Englishman Triumph is showing itself even more in shape since it progresses of … 71.3%, in particular thanks to the 87 Speed Triple sold which represent more than 40% of the sales! Suddenly Ducati, more timid (-7.3%), loses its 8th place.

Nothing is going well on the other hand at Yamaha which still loses 32.7% compared to October 2004. Buyers of the tuning forks brand obviously prefer to wait for any end-of-year promotions, or quite simply availability, at the beginning of 2006, very promising new products presented at the Mondial (read).

Still, the new R6, Fazer 1000, FZ1 and MT-03 will arrive too late to keep Yamaha in first place, against Suzuki who can count on their valiant Bandits and SVs before launching their new GSX-R and GSR " B King "(read and).

Note also the return of two scooters in the top 10 of October: the T-Max and the Burgman, which however are not enough for their manufacturers to stop their declines. Indeed, for the first ten months, Yamaha and Suzuki just manage to match their results from last year..

Finally on the niche market side, Aprilia last month sold 105 motorcycles, Buell 53, Moto Guzzi 47, Husqvarna 26 and Voxan 10…
