In the big trail segment, there are maxi-trail-GTs, backpackers, those who try versatility. And there is the GranPasso. Light, powerful, expressive, bordering on the athlete, the machine assumes its difference. Some may continue to fall for him in 2017 but he will not go much further. Morini maintains it in Euro3, and the regulations will play its fate. The opportunity to discover it; before the end of the clap or a major development? Because the latest changes are starting to date…
The Granpasso has been playing a double game since 2014: its equipment is enriched but the bill is steep. That year, the Italian trail gradually increased by a bundle of euros. What happened ?
Let’s see what has changed on board. Certainly, there is a selection of carbon parts that can be painted at the customer’s request: chain guard, front and rear mudguards, fairing sides. New metal passenger handles are embedded in the rear. Not really enough to justify the price fever. The factory is certainly facing new production costs. Suddenly, the floor price and the improvements of 2013 (already a lot of carbon parts, a new voltage regulator, a new anti-slip clutch allowing 50% less effort at the lever, an improved saddle, better quality paint ) dissolve in economic questioning.
The Italian trail especially emphasizes its dynamic potential in the midst of the trail war. The BMW R 1200 GS dominates the market and serves as a benchmark. A number of typed machines and engines face it. For his part, Morini has chosen a more sporty approach without forgetting the road / trail aspect..
A wide saddle inspiring comfort, long-travel suspensions, tubeless spoked rims fitted with mixed tires, a windshield showing a certain protective disposition, a 25 l tank, an engine spoiler: the Gran Passo seems ready for tourism, and even a little bit of road. The options suitcases, GPS, heated grips, etc … will not make you fear to cut down on the kilometer.
But an Italian is distinguished above all by her temperament. And sportiness and character have not been sidelined on the Morini trail. Its chiseled and aggressive build has nothing of the kindness of a Versys 1000 or a Super-T. The style (from the Marabese Design studio) is very present, daring, even disturbing with its lenticular optics – a matter of taste – and ensures the essential: to be noticed. Its Star Trek posterior decorated with a raised pot with 3 holes also plays with the eyes. Gaffe; the visual is only a prelude to the promised services. The 1200 engine is the same as that fitted to the Corsaro, a spirited roadster and not just a little. At 118 horses, we are already dealing with something serious. The character is more … sassy.
Aside from their travel, the suspensions are more reminiscent of that of a hypersport rather than of a trail: Ohlins shock absorber fixed laterally with adjustment of compression, preload, rebound and height, inverted fork of 50 mm of diameter -> the Italian trail promises to be of leading efficiency. The braking system is wiser, more suited to this type of machine: Brembo with 2 pistons by caliper biting 2 front discs of 298 mm in diameter; but controlled by a radial pump.
The Gran Passo likes blood shots, and won’t really want to ride with the Crosstourer or Tiger Explorer. It will clearly prefer to sinter to Multistrada, 1200 Dorsoduro and 1130 Tre-K.
