Although the name of Guzzi sounds like a good wine with the character of yesteryear, a little more pep and especially strength in his big road would not be refused. But no question of serving a nightclub-style Monster-tonic cocktail; let’s stay in a carpet and cigar lounge. Besides, Guzzi has the right engine in stock and it is high time to piggyback it on Mandello’s traveler. So here is the Norge 1200 8V, whose essential transverse V-Twin is capped with heads with 4 valves per cylinder. A handful of torque is offered in the operation, and above all a dozen more canassons have reproduced in the stable. This new Norge thus benefits from 102 horsepower at a speed of 7,000 rpm. Enough to ensure more vigorous reminders coupled with a more sympathetic conduct.
New engine, new speed? Not just because of him, but also because of the other changes. Fork springs are replaced for better damping response and increased cornering qualities. The fairing is redesigned to increase the level of protection a notch and improve the cooling of the twin. Sitting 800 mm from the ground, the pilot benefits from a close-up instrument panel, a 12 V socket and heated grips. On the transmission side, we find the 6-speed gearbox and the swingarm equipped with CRAC (Compact Reactive Shaft Drive) technology, the Italian version of BMW’s Paralever; shaft + cardan shaft and anti-torque effect integrated in the single-sided arm.
More powerful, more protective, better equipped, heavier (5 kg), can the Guzzi Norge 1200 8V tear the BMW R 1200 RT from its throne? Not sure, but Italian charm is more passionate than German efficiency (and thoroughness).
