Moto-Guzzi NTX 750 1989

During the second half of the 1980s, none of the motorcycle manufacturers would have wanted to give way to their competitors in the trail market, stimulated by the success of African rally-type races..

Moto-Guzzi, although not having the industrial capacities of the Japanese manufacturers, still leaves its range of big “African” trails: The NTX.

This range will be available in 3 displacements (350, 650 and 750cc) technically very similar. Indeed, the NTX use the small Guzzi block as well as the “Tonti” frame also used for small road. The 750cc benefits from a slightly more elaborate finish than its 2 little brothers, although already obsolete when it was released; these lines refer more to the old Yamaha 600 Tenere, than to the modern Supertenere 750.

The fact remains that the NTX shows good qualities. The engine, although less powerful than these competitors, is very torquey and tows generously. No need to go looking for the red zone to get the most out of this rustic mill. The twin prefers to operate in a speed range of 3000 to 6000 rpm; Which is perfect for everyday use.

The cycle part is balanced as long as the pilot does not forget that he is sitting on a big trail. The original road frame goes well with the trail suspensions and ensures good stability (characteristic of Mandello road bikes). However, the fork pumps a lot on hard braking. Especially when the 30 liter (plastic) tank is full. The latter also has a great influence on the behavior of the machine. With 10 or 12 liters of gasoline, the big plastic container is forgotten and the motorcycle would be almost manageable. On the other hand once past the gas station, the center of gravity of the motorcycle seriously raised requires more caution when the turns tighten..

The protection is excellent, the high bubble returns the air flow above the shoulders, only the helmet suffers the eddies of the air around 140-150 km / h. The legs stay dry thanks to the cylinders and the clever (but not necessarily very aesthetic) small deflector attached to the double cradle. Only the huge reservoir (again) will tend to concentrate water at the level of the crotch; which is quite unpleasant when you get caught in the rain. The saddle is soft is comfortable.

A road trail with generous torque, relatively low weight, equipped with a cardan shaft and a large tank; this could have made it a great commercial success. Unfortunately, the competition marketed models offering more power and a more modern image for almost the same price. Only orders from the Italian state to equip its police services allowed Moto-Guzzi to keep this model in its range until the 1990s..
