New: Yamaha

The new Yamaha FZ8

What does a manufacturer do when he needs a motorcycle that pulls as powerfully as its 600 series never could, and is so handy and inexpensive that the 1000 series never was? He goes right in between and builds an 800.

Yamaha FZ6, Suzuki GSR 600, Honda Hornet 600 – the Japanese master plan of a semi-faired or uncovered motorcycle of the upper middle class is based on the continuation of the 600 super sports car in a different version. Constant further development, motivated by racing, ensures tried and tested engines and components that function indestructibly and superbly with less power and the lower demands of pure road traffic.

But Kawasaki has been relying on the Z 750 with more displacement, power and torque since 2004. And when non-Japanese rebels like the Triumph Street Triple or the BMW F 800 S and R passed by with a relaxed pulling power, Yamaha had had enough and created the FZ8.

It is based on the fine FZ1, whose 1000cc four-cylinder with the same stroke, but nine millimeters less bore and, of course, a new cylinder head has been given completely new characteristics. According to the paper form, it develops more torque at a lower speed than the Kawa Z 750, in peak performance it draws the same level at another lower speed.

The crankshafts of the FZ8 and FZ1 engines have the same stroke, the same bearing dimensions and are of the same width. So the FZ1 engine housing can be adopted. Nevertheless, the crankshafts are not identical; the FZ8 shaft is 2.5 kg lighter than that of the 1000 series. The primary drive and gears two to six of the gearbox of the FZ1 have been retained, the secondary drive and first gear have a shorter gear ratio. As a provisional rate diagram shows, there is an even gradation.

The close relationship of the FZ sisters doesn’t stop with the drive – the frame and swing arm have been completely taken over. This is confirmed by visual inspection and a comparison of the data: steering head angle, caster, wheelbase, spring travel – everything is identical. Only the rear wheel and tires of the FZ8 are narrower; instead of a 190/50 on a 6-inch rim, it wears an easy-to-use 180/55 tire on 5.5 inches.

In Germany, the bare FZ8 and the half-faired Fazer8 are only available with ABS. They cost 8495 and 8795 euros plus additional costs. On the other hand, it is tolerable that the 800 series has to do without the Exup system and only received simple spring elements and a simple silencer. Because apart from that, it is equipped with high quality with its stainless steel manifolds and one-piece brake calipers.

Technical specifications:

Four-cylinder four-stroke in-line engine, bore / stroke 68 / 53.6 mm, 779 cm³, 78 kW (106 HP) at 10,000 rpm, 82 Nm at 8,000 rpm, light metal bridge frame, double disc brake at the front, Ø 310 mm, disc brake at the rear, Ø 267 mm, seat height 815 mm, weight 216 kg (Fazer8 220 kg), price 8495 euros (Fazer8 8795 euros) plus additional costs
