Kawasaki Z 900 RS

Retro bike for the 2018 model year

None other than the Z1 should be the template for the retro bike Kawasaki Z 900 RS. Most likely there will also be a Cafe Racer variant of it. The modern and successful Z 900 serves as the basis.

The inline four-cylinder with 900 cm³ provides 111 hp and 98.5 Nm at 6,500 rpm. The cooling fins on the cylinder head convey “Hey, I’m an air-cooled one, just like the Z 1”, but the modern engine is liquid-cooled. Promises in terms of sound Kawasaki “positive emotions”: When starting, the engine should rev up briefly and then turn into a deep rumble when idling and at low speeds. In addition, the manifolds are more voluminous than on the Z 900, thanks to the double wall.

For the tubular space frame, the Kawasaki Z 900 RS uses the parts shelf of the Z 900, whereby the seating position on the retro bike is relaxed and upright instead of oriented towards the front. The frame in the area of the tank has been modified a little: it is teardrop-shaped and holds 17 liters.

Cockpit with analog instruments and LCD

The nice thing about retro bikes is that they should look old, but with modern technology on board – without being overloaded with it. The Kawasaki Z 900 RS comes with two-stage traction control – for sporty standard cruising and for slippery surfaces. The assist and slipping clutch reduces the reverse torque and thus the punching and slipping of the rear wheel when downshifting. In addition, thanks to this technology, coupling most likely requires just as little manual force as with the Z 900.

LEDs shine at the front and back. But with particular finesse, as the manufacturer emphasizes: “The parking light units in the chambers of the high beam illuminate the entire headlight and thus create the look of a classic headlight.” And: “In contrast to standard LED tail lights, where the light shines unbundled from several small points (positions), the light appears in a continuous glow due to the special lens of the tail light. "

Analog speedometer and tachometer round off the retrofinish in the cockpit, but there is still space for an LC display with gear indicator, (day) odometer, temperature, etc. Kawasaki has now also commented on the price: the new RS will be available from 11,695 euros (plus additional costs).
