Dominant since the start of the weekend, Jorge Lorenzo set the best time of the qualifying session played this afternoon in Estoril, under bright sunshine and perfect track conditions.

Author of a time of 1’36.214, the Mallorcan seizes his fifth pole position of the season, less than five tenths of his qualifying time acquired in Michelin in 2008 (1’35.715).

Determined not to be impressed by his young rival-teammate (cross out the unnecessary), Valentino Rossi whipped his Yamaha throughout the session to finally finish 0.240 seconds behind the poleman.

A time at the top of the session, Casey Stoner set about responding to rumors about him by taking third place on the grid: a remarkable performance after three races without running and almost two months without training !

In good form since the first practice on Friday, Dani Pedrosa will start from the second row ahead of Colin Edwards, Randy de Puniet, Loris Capirossi, Andrea Dovizioso and Nicky Hayden.

They explain themselves…

Jorge Lorenzo (pole position): "It had been a long time since I had pole and it bothered me a bit because doing a fast lap has always been one of my strengths. Lately, we’ve been struggling to go fast with soft tires. But this weekend everyone worked well and we managed to have a good set-up with both types of tires. Tomorrow will be another day and I know that many of us can win … but I’ll just drive to the limit and see what happens "…

Valentino rossi (2nd time): "We have improved the settings a lot this afternoon compared to Friday and we managed to get rid of a number of problems, especially with the braking. We need more traction on the exit. slow turns and we’re wasting time in the hairpin. It’s going to be a big fight tomorrow and it will be exhausting doing 28 laps in this heat, but we’ll be ready! "

Casey stoner (3rd time): "Yesterday again, I told myself that the first row would be very difficult to conquer, but today I almost regret not having won the pole! I am tired because I have not driven for several months , but so far I haven’t encountered any of the symptoms that forced me to interrupt my season. We were very competitive on race tires, but as soon as we put on the soft tires we ran out of grip. I want to thank those who have always supported me and laugh at some of the things I read about me! "

Julian Simon (pole in 125): "Estoril is not very far from home, so obviously I would like to be titled here but many of us can win this race and I think we will see more clearly in Philipp Island in Australia , in 15 days".

Hector Barbera (pole in 250): "I’m in good shape at the moment and I hope to get a good result here. We have found a good set-up and despite the large number of riders likely to win on Sunday, we are confident".
