New retro boxer engine from BMW for cruiser models

Debut in a custom bike

Time and again, BMW has shown that they want to go back to the cruiser segment – with a boxer engine. In Japan, the customizer Custom Works ZON has now built a bike around the new Boxer.

"Very soon, BMW is bringing an authentic, emotional cruiser," says BMW motorcycle boss Markus Schramm in an interview with MOTORRAD. And it will probably have a completely reinterpreted boxer engine. What the cruiser customers can expect in terms of motors, the Bavarians show in advance embedded in a custom bike. The Bavarians commissioned the Japanese motorcycle manufacturer Custom Works ZON to build a machine based on the new type of boxer engine. The Showbike Departed has now been presented in Japan.

Boxer with 1,800 cc?

The Bavarians still do not have any specific information about the new boxer, but the first pictures already provide ample evaluation basis. While the recently introduced ShiftCam boxer is packed full of innovations, the new retro boxer is obviously turning to design features that are far back in the past.

Very soon we could see the new boxer in a cruiser model from BMW.

Both the external geometry and the visible elements, such as the push rods running in chrome-plated protective tubes above the cylinders are reminiscent of the boxer engines that were built by BMW until the end of the 1960s. The project designation R18 could indicate a full displacement of 1.8 liters. Further covers with centrally located spark plugs can be seen under the milled covers of the customizer. We therefore assume a four-valve engine. The push rods running at the top also indicate a camshaft located at the top of the engine housing. Air-oil cooling is contemporary. Carburettors are installed on the show bike, but for series production the two-cylinder will use an injection system. With similar design features, Harley-Davidson achieves around 90 hp and a good 150 Nm of torque. BMW shouldn’t be less, more likely.

The first cruiser model with the new boxer should be presented in late 2019 and hit the market in 2020. With the new giant boxer, BMW has its sights primarily on the US market.

Japanese custom style

The new prototype boxer was packed in a custom bike with a classic shape and lots of craftsmanship
in the detailed solutions – all in the highest Japanese quality. The very low silhouette of the bike is reminiscent of Ernst Henne’s record-breaking machines of the late 1920s and 1930s.

The custom bike has the "Best of Show Motorcycle" won at the Hot Rod Custom Show in Yokohama.

The large wheels with 21 inches at the front and 26 inches at the rear are milled from aluminum and fitted with relatively narrow tires, and the trapezoidal front fork is also milled from solid. The tubular steel rear swing arm was attached to the tubular space frame with hidden suspension. The large-volume motor hangs in this elaborately manufactured frame construction. The integrated tank, the seat unit and the front paneling are made of sheet metal by hand. Departed, formed by Yuichi Yoshizawa and Yoshikazu Ueda, won the “Best of Show Motorcycle” award at the Hot Rod Custom Show in Yokohama, Japan.
