Triple pack from BMW

BMW will present five new models this autumn, three of which were on display at the Intermot in Cologne at the beginning of October: a roadster for country roads, a half-disguised sports tourer and the revised racing replica S 1000 RR.

After the R 1200 GS and the R 1200 RT, BMW is now introducing two more motorcycles with the water-cooled boxer: the uncovered R 1200 R and the R. 1200 RS with half fairing. The 125 hp engine was taken over unchanged, but the R and RS are the first of this series whose chassis dispenses with the Telelever front wheel guidance and instead uses an upside-down fork. Where the rear bearing of the trailing arm sits on the Telelever motorcycles, an additional bolt stiffens the tubular space frame on the Telegabel models. The fork creates space for a central water cooler; two side coolers like GS or RT would look strange on a bare motorcycle and make the half-faired one unnecessarily wide.

Favorable upgrading of R and RS with equipment packages

A look at the chassis geometry data also shows, however, that the new boxer models should not be an R nineT with a water-cooled engine and a different appearance: In the pursuit of stability and comfort, the developers chose a longer wheelbase and caster , the steering head is flatter than the one nineT and the spring travel of the R are unusually long for a street motorcycle at 140 millimeters at the front and rear. A Dynamic ESA is also available as an option for the R and RS, which constantly adapts the damping to the road conditions and the pilot’s driving style.

But before this idea gets lost in the wide range of optional equipment and accessories, first a sentence about the standard equipment. These include the partially integrated braking system, ABS, the anti-slip control ASC and two driving modes, namely "Rain" and "Road". The standard bench seat accommodates the driver at a moderate height of 790 millimeters; benches 30 millimeters deeper or higher are available on request. Tea higher version is an alternative worth considering for sporty drivers.

As usual with BMW, the R and RS can be upgraded with equipment packages. There is a choice of comfort, touring and dynamic packages, which are not mutually exclusive. The features summarized in it – heated grips, case holder or cruise control, to name just three – can also be ordered individually, with the exception of the on-board computer. The Pro shift assistant, which is subject to a surcharge, should also be emphasized. It allows upshifts and downshifts without the clutch.

This system was developed in the Superbike World Championship. When it was ready for series production, the R 1200 RT was the next available new model to introduce, but actually it is more in line with the super sporty S 1000 RR. So it is no surprise that the now revised version of the super sports car can be equipped with it at an additional cost.

A lot of fine-tuning benefited the chassis

The 2015 S 1000 RR offers revised ducts, a new intake camshaft and lighter intake valves as standard. The intake and exhaust systems have been optimized, which saves three kilograms and now brings the engine to 199 hp. The torque curve of the four-cylinder is even more impressive – between 9500 and 12000 rpm it is consistently close to the maximum of 113 Nm.

It is probably due to the dominance of car manufacturers in the BMW Group that everything that disguises a motorcycle is also called a body. In any case, the press release reports that the “body scopes” have been completely redesigned. This includes new headlights that are also positioned differently than before. Despite such retouching, the 2015 S 1000 RR can also be recognized as such at first glance.

A lot of fine-tuning benefited the chassis. The modifications range from changes to the geometry of the chassis – shorter wheelbase, slightly longer caster, slightly steeper steering head angle, tighter negative suspension travel – right up to
to the changed and still variable pivot point. Not to forget the fine-tuning of frame stiffness and elasticity in certain areas. The semi-active damping setting, previously a specialty of the HP4, is now also available for the S 1000 RR at an additional cost.

The so-called "Pro driving modes", which include the previous "Slick mode" and a user-programmable mode, are also subject to a surcharge. This equipment also includes a program that enables perfect race starts and a programmable speed control for the speed limit in the pit lane. Cruise control for civil traffic is also available.

The question that arises in view of the long list of standard equipment and equipment that is subject to surcharge, namely the question of prices, cannot be answered entirely by BMW at the moment. For now, interested parties should whet their appetite for all the amenities.
