BMW / 5 series and the factory in Berlin Spandau

In the mid-1960s, automobile production in the BMW works in Munich increased sharply, whereupon motorcycle production was outsourced to Berlin Spandau in 1969. Production started there with 400 employees who made 30 models per day. At the same time, it started with the / 5 series, which was a completely new development at the time: a new double loop tubular frame made of steel and a swing arm with two oil pressure struts at the rear and a hydraulically damped telescopic fork at the front, long spring travel and significantly greater ground clearance than the previous BMW motorcycles Features of the most innovative BMW series. The light alloy rims with lower unsprung masses and the large-sized duplex full-hub brakes were also an important innovation.

The folding bellows on the telescopic fork, which protect against stone chips, for example, but also against fine-grained dirt that continues to clog the Simmerrings to this day, are completely based on the historical model.

The two-cylinder boxer engine was also a completely new development, with 32 hp in the R 50/5, 40 hp in the R 60/5 and 50 hp in the top model R 75/5. The engine’s crankshaft is forged in one piece and has slide bearings for the main crankshaft bearings and the bearings for the connecting rods, while the previous models still had roller bearings. In addition, the camshaft was now no longer above, but below the crankshaft, so the pipes for the push rods for valve actuation are located below the cylinders made of light metal.

“The mixture preparation is carried out on the R 75/5 by new constant pressure carburettors with a vacuum membrane instead of the slide carburettors used previously. As a result, the R 75/5 shines with a particularly direct throttle response, very good acceleration behavior and low fuel consumption. And as a special comfort attribute, the R 75/5 also has an electric starter ”, so the passage in the press release.

The production figures at the Berlin BMW plant rose quickly, and in 1970 there were already 12,287 vehicles leaving the factory. When the / 5 series was discontinued in July 1973, BMW had already produced a total of 68,956 motorcycles in Berlin.
