MotoGP – Moto GP Jerez FP2 practice: Lorenzo dominates the 1st day –

Triumph Rocket III Roadster

More power, more torque, better brakes and a more martial appearance for less money: The Triumph press prose is very self-confident about the Rocket Roadster. Rightly?

The feeling that the Rocket Roadster creates when driving is so incomparable that every self-respecting motorcyclist must have experienced it once in a lifetime. Truly strong words that can be found in the press release about the machine. Balancing this motor monster on two wheels, however, has been a powerful and lasting experience since its debut in 2004.

Thanks to a larger silencer volume and a modified map, the engine should develop even more flavor than in the sister models, the Rocket Classic and Touring. To come to the point: In terms of performance, not much has changed despite the promised nine additional horsepower. The Roadster lifted 135 hp on the MOTORRAD test bench and is therefore on a par with the measurements of the Classic Rocket. However, the roadster drive produces around 12 Newton meters more torque at 3100 rpm and sets the bar all the way up at 210 Newton meters. At least as far as the motorcycle sector is concerned.

The huge rear silencers have more volume and contribute to increased performance.

You don’t need anything. Because the mountain of torque, which rises steeply shortly after idling speed, seduces almost every pilot to shift gears at a maximum of 2500 rpm. Well: life between 2000 and 3000 turns. That is pure enjoyment. The bearish power paired with the coarse, resinous cooing from the silencers – moments of happiness are for sale. Like its predecessors, the Rocket is so powerful that after a few meters of travel you have already engaged fifth gear and wonder why there are others. Although gear changes are actually more precise and easier to do through modifications in the transmission.

There was also a design change in the drive train, which was reinforced and thus adapted to the supposedly higher performance. This cannot be felt while driving. Nevertheless, one has to agree with the press poetry.

The Roadster is actually the best rocket in history: At 16,990 euros, it is the cheapest version, the most lean angle, the most active and, thanks to ABS, also the safest. Because with this 369 kilogram bolide it is damn hard to feel your way to the blocking limit. A task that now makes the standard ABS superfluous. Equipped in this way, the potential of the very effective brakes can be optimally used. The very soft suspension set-up prevents top values when braking, as the fork locks up and starts to punch in extreme stopping maneuvers. But you can live with that in favor of comfort.

Dear English people, why not like this right away? The Roadster is actually the best cruiser you’ve ever built, as it combines all the benefits of easy gliding with those of a slightly sporty gait. They are also packaged in a very tasty way. It remains to be seen whether, as a real biker, you can’t really die in peace without ever having ridden this machine.
