Premiere: Triumph Street Triple R

The redesigned Triumph Street Triple R

Tea doesn’t get better with the second and third infusions, but motorbikes do. Triumph gave the popular Street Triple R a major overhaul and PS really accelerated.

AT.right, ten, twelve, in the corner! And again eight, ten, twelve, straight into the corner. The rhythm is fast, the concentration maximum, the adrenaline level at the limit. The mixture of daring, sloping position and speed frenzy inspires the pulse and lust for life. That is country road sport in a class of its own! It sounds like rhythmic gymnastics, but instead of jumping up and down in skin-tight aerobic suits in the counted rhythm, we send the tachometer needle over and over again from eight to ten to twelve over the scale.

In the middle of the Andalusian no man’s land, tour guide and Triumph developer Felipe Lopez sets a superb pace. His looks in the rearview mirror are more often than necessary. An indication that he did not expect a bloodhound to follow in close distance on his track. Then a long left turn, an estimated 210 degree arc, which goes in third gear with 12,000 revolutions on the clock in full incline – that sucks! The top of the pass is approaching and these damp patches reappear on the asphalt. The new Street Triple R reacts directly and without delay to the steering impulses and circles past dangerous spots with millimeter precision. Lopez turns the right turn signal and we stop. With thieving joy and shining eyes, he grins like a villain from his helmet. "You like the bike, eh ?!" "Yes I do!"

Without an under-seat exhaust, the new rear is much more airy and graceful.

As soon as his helmet is down, he begins to rave about the revamped Streety. Explains that the new exhaust under the engine saves 3.6 kilograms and, together with the new chassis geometry and the lighter wheels, improves handling. The author notes that the pillion will no longer smell of exhaust gas either.

There is nothing but sunshine between the two test drivers. Which is easy to understand – after all, the Streety R, which also only received the new headlights this year, has always been a cool bundle of joy. In addition to the marginal changes to the chassis geometry, targeted weight savings are primarily intended to improve the handling and driving behavior of the 2013 Street Triple R. The rear wheel and swing arm have become one kilogram lighter, which reduces the unsprung mass at the rear by seven percent. The lighter rear frame and the more compact, downward and forward-moving exhaust ensure a more front-heavy, static weight distribution from front 52 to rear 48 percent (up to 2012 v. 49 / h: 51 percent). These changes are not really noticeable the first time you contact us without a direct comparison to the old model. Which is not bad, because despite the serious revision of its exterior, the Streety R has at least retained all of its qualities. It can still be the tame beginner’s bike or – within the blink of an eye – mutate into a full guest. Thanks to top ergonomics, it embeds its pilot in an equally sporty and comfortable way and leaves it up to him whether he wants to travel or speed.

The rebound valve is directly under the handlebar and very difficult to reach.

In narrow passages on narrow streets, the little triple is in her element, zipping and zapping from left to right with little effort. The threesome turns up spontaneously and very evenly, but thanks to the new mapping it should consume significantly less fuel. Only the first gear was translated a little longer to make the connection to the second gear more smooth.

So is the Street Triple R the perfect highway motorcycle? For sporty drivers and handling fans who are tired of 170 hp, gallons of sweat and the permanent threat of losing their driving license. But you would want a smoother acting (available for 345 euros extra) and a more powerful power delivery in the upper third. The Streety suits beginners and re-entrants with its low weight (its direct competitors are between 20 and 40 kg heavier). In addition, the great handling and predictable thrust help to quickly build trust in her. Only the brakes, which are very appealing, can be frightening, but there is now an optional Nissin ABS.

Changes in detail

  • six kilos lighter (184 instead of 190 kg)
  • ABS optional
  • new frame and new design
  • new geometry and weight distribution
  • larger steering angle
  • longer first course

PS judgment
The Streety has remained true to itself and is certainly the best bike in this (price) class. Thanks to many accessories, it can be individually styled, but that is really expensive. However, one can argue about the new design. I don’t find this mixture of Ducati Monster rear frame and Honda Hornet exhaust particularly original.
