The Brno autodrome, in the Czech Republic, welcomes the drivers on a route known to be very technical: theater of the end-of-season suspense, Brno marks this year the start of a title hunt that has become almost desperate for Rossi…. Round by round !
With a length of 5,403 m, the Brno circuit has a straight line of only 636 m and eight right turns and six left. Offering very good visibility for the 84,125 spectators present on Sunday, it guarantees the show !
In MotoGP, it was called the garden of Max Biaggi, technical rider if there was one … or rather was! Brno has been welcoming pilots since 1930, on a road circuit which passed the houses before the autodrome proper was built in 1980. Revised for greater safety in 1996, it remains a very technical track with bumpy or bumpy bends. cant. The turns are quite quick, so you only use five gears in MotoGP and the 1st is only used at the start! The average is still high there, although we stay there for a very long time resting on the angle.
Last element of suspense: if the weather is good during the two days of testing, we expect a possible downpour between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m., or just during the MotoGP race which could therefore see the application of the new regulations for the first time. planning a change of machine during the race … Place to the show !

Capirossi, with his superb lap time, was 2nd on the grid 0.25 s behind Rossi, then Roberts took his place on the front row also on his last lap, 0.4 s behind Rossi. Hayden, dislodged from the first row by Roberts, took 2nd row 0.5s from pole, just ahead of Nakano. Elias occupies a nice 6th place with a time 0.6 s behind Rossi. In 3rd row we find Hopkins and Edwards at 0.7 s, accompanied by Pedrosa at 0.9 s. De Puniet 10th, just under a second off pole, ahead Melandri by 1sec and Stoner by 1.4sec … with a time that would have given him the second fastest time last year !
Sunday morning, Rossi, who had not been better than 10th throughout the warm up, slammed the best clock at the end of the session, no doubt just to "reassure" his opponents … Pedrosa, who also had a warm up up far from the outposts, shows himself at the end of the session with a stopwatch which places him at 3 / 100ths behind Rossi! Roberts and Melandri are 0.1s from Dottore, Hayden at 0.2s, Capirossi and Nakano at 0.3s, Hopkins at 0.4s and Stoner at 0.7s. Edwards 10th at 0.7s is the last in Rossi’s second. Tamada and Checa are at 1 s and De Puniet signs the 12th stopwatch at 1.1 s.
Departure. Capirossi had the best start and turned with already 2-3 lengths ahead of Hayden, Rossi, Roberts, Stoner very well started, Pedrosa, Nakano, Hopkins, Edwards, Elias and Melandri. Stoner passes 4th in front of Roberts and Melandri passes Elias. Rossi passed 2nd in front of Hayden at the chicane. Edwards passed 8th ahead of Hopkins. Capirossi is getting further and further ahead of Rossi. Edwards passed 7th in front of Nakano at the angle change of the 2nd chicane and Melandri 9th in front of Hopkins.
In the first lap, Capirossi leads by 0.8 seconds over Rossi, Hayden, Stoner, Pedrosa past Roberts, Edwards, Nakano and Melandri. Hopkins is 0.9 s ahead of Melandri who takes Tamada, Elias, Vermeulen, Hofmann, De Puniet and Checa. Ellison was 0.7 s behind Checa, Cardoso still 0.8 s further and Silva 0.9 s further, 6.6 s behind Capirossi. Pedrosa takes a lot of angles to keep up with the pace in the first chicane and builds up a little heat, luckily of no consequence. On the way out, it was Nakano who bites beyond the buzzer: Melandri immediately takes the opportunity to pass 8th. Edwards passes 6th in front of Roberts and Rossi makes an effort to get back on Capirossi by releasing Hayden.
On the second lap, Capirossi drives home the point with the fastest lap: he is now 0.9 s ahead of Rossi, 1.4 s over Hayden and 1.9 s over Stoner, Pedrosa, Edwards, Roberts, Melandri and Nakano. Hopkins is 0.5 s later, 0.6 s ahead of Tamada, Elias, Vermeulen, De Puniet, Hofmann and Checa. In the long left, Pedrosa took advantage of a slight gap by Stoner to pass him by tightening the rope. The young Spaniard quickly took a few lengths at Stoner as he made an effort to catch up on his teammate Hayden. In the chicane, Edwards also took advantage of an imprecise trajectory by Stoner to take 4th.
On lap 3, Capirossi, with a new fastest lap, increased his lead to 1.7 s over Rossi, 2.2 s over Hayden, 2.5 s over Pedrosa and 3.2 s over Edwards, Stoner, Roberts, Melandri and Nakano. Hopkins is at 4.4 s, Tamada at 5 s, Elias at 5.6 s, Hofmann and De Puniet at 6.1 s. Melandri took advantage of the draw to pass 7th in front of Roberts at the end of the straight, but got out of the rope in the long straight that followed and had to let the American pass. Melandri returns again just after the angle change. In the chicane, Roberts pays him the courtesy by ironing him again at the change of angle! Pedrosa who let Edwards go got back into the Hayden wheel. Melandri passes Roberts on double right braking but pulls away and has to let the KR211V pass again.
On lap 4, Capirossi was 2.3 s ahead of Rossi who kept a margin of 0.4 s over Hayden and Pedrosa. Edwards is not far, then Stoner precedes Roberts, who stumbles upon Melandri, followed like his shadow by Nakano. Melandri takes advantage of the straight to pass Roberts now under threat from Nakano. In the chicane, Pedrosa tries to pass Hayden at the change of angle, but the American resists well by diving in front of his wheel while Capirossi continues to take off…
On lap 5, Capirossi was 2.7 s ahead of Rossi, Hayden and Pedrosa combined, 3.7 s over Edwards, 4.2 s over Stoner and 4.6 s over Melandri, Roberts and Nakano. De Puniet was 14th 9.4s behind the leader, Checa and Hofmann 0.6s behind him. In this lap, Hayden loses contact with Rossi and Edwards is left behind by the two official Honda.
On the 6th lap, Capirossi was 3.2s ahead of Rossi and behind the Italian, Pedrosa, who saw Hayden lose contact, took advantage of the draw to pass his teammate! But Hayden delays his braking and Pedrosa has to bow to avoid hitting the No. 69…
Stoner and Melandri have now returned to Edwards’ wheel and it is Melandri who launches hostilities as they enter the chicane. But the better-placed Stoner resisted … until the exit where the smarter Melandri had placed better and accelerated earlier. When braking the double right, Melandri got the best of Stoner while Hopkins in turn came back to Nakano’s wheel. At the entrance of the fast chicane, Melandri passed 5th ahead of Edwards.
On lap 7, Capirossi was 3.9 s ahead of Rossi, still 0.5 s in front of Hayden on whom Pedrosa was increasingly pressing. Melandri 5th takes Edwards, Stoner and Roberts, then Nakano sees Hopkins approaching little by little. At the end of the straight, Pedrosa manages to pass 3rd in front of Hayden. Behind, Melandri who released Edwards looks back on the two HRC Honda. Pedrosa releases Hayden and returns to Rossi who reacts immediately and accelerates.
On the 8th lap, Capirossi was 4.2 s ahead of Rossi, which contained the ascent of Pedrosa. Hayden hangs in front of Melandri who makes the effort and slowly comes back. Edwards contains Stoner, Roberts, Nakano and Hopkins trying to pick up this group. At the entrance of the fast chicane, Melandri takes 4th place from Hayden.
On lap 9, behind Capirossi who was still flying, two duos formed: Rossi in front of Pedrosa, and Melandri in front of Hayden who was hanging on. Further on, Stoner took advantage of the draw to move up to 6th ahead of Edwards now under threat from Roberts and Nakano. Hopkins can only stay behind the Japanese. Stoner gradually distances Edwards and returns to Melandri and Hayden. De Puniet returns to 0.3 s from Vermeulen.
On lap 10, Capirossi was 5 full seconds ahead of Rossi, followed by Pedrosa. Two seconds later, Melandri and Hayden are almost joined by Stoner. 0.6s behind, Edwards contains Roberts and Nakano on which Hopkins returns. Entering the long straight, Pedrosa, who entered very hard from the front, was forced to pull away and lost a few lengths on Rossi. Braking the last chicane, Roberts passed 7th ahead of Edwards.
On the 11th lap, behind Capirossi who increased his lead to 5.6 s, Rossi was again followed by Pedrosa. Behind them, Hayden does not want to let go and tries to attack Melandri at the end of the straight line. The Italian began to brake beyond the vibrator but retained the advantage, with full confidence. Roberts makes the effort and brings Edwards, Nakano and Hopkins back to the Honda trio ahead of them.
On lap 12, Capirossi widened the gap less: with 5.7 seconds, he took only a tenth behind Rossi and Pedrosa returned to the wheel of the Dottore. Melandri, Hayden and Stoner are almost joined by Roberts and Nakano. Hopkins is not far away. Hayden came back to 4th in front of Melandri. Behind, Elias passes Tamada. Pedrosa is more and more pressing on Rossi. Nakano passes 8th ahead of Edwards.
On lap 13, Capirossi was 6 seconds ahead of Rossi and Pedrosa, 9.6 seconds over Hayden, Melandri and Stoner and 10.4 seconds over Roberts, Nakano and Edwards. Hopkins is 0.6s behind the Texan. Stoner passes 5th in front of Melandri.
On lap 14, Capirossi was 6.6 s ahead of Rossi and Pedrosa. 3.6 s later, Stoner takes 4th place from Hayden at the end of the straight while Melandri is stuck in the Kid’s exhaust! Roberts got back into Melandri’s wheel by bringing Nakano back after dropping Edwards at 1s. Little by little, Stoner lets go of Hayden and Melandri also passes the American.
On lap 15, Capirossi is now 7 seconds ahead! Rossi holds Pedrosa back a little further, then Stoner and Melandri coming back on him let go of Hayden, threatened by Roberts and Nakano. Dropped, Edwards is 0.6sec ahead of Hopkins. Melandri passed 4th in front of Stoner. Rossi seems to be slowly leaving Pedrosa behind.
On lap 16, behind Capirossi, still a solid leader, Rossi increased his lead over Pedrosa to 0.4 s. Melandri and Stoner are 0.5s ahead of Hayden, followed by Roberts and Nakano. Edwards is only 0.3s ahead of Hopkins while Pedrosa makes the effort and comes back to Rossi again.
On the 17th lap, Capirossi maintained his lead over Rossi and Pedrosa. Melandri and Stoner distance Hayden, who has more and more difficulty in containing Roberts and Nakano. Edwards maintains his lead over Hopkins. Pedrosa tries to brake Rossi at the start of the chicane, but the Italian dives on him "to intimidation" and retains the advantage, forcing the young Spaniard to raise his machine to avoid hitting the Yamaha! Hayden and Roberts left Nakano slightly behind and returned to Melandri and Stoner.
At the change of angle of the penultimate chicane, Pedrosa passed Rossi but the Dottore, better placed for acceleration, gained the advantage! In the last chicane, Pedrosa attacks again, gets inside Rossi who cannot take the rope and must give up his 2nd place !
On the 18th lap, behind Capirossi, Rossi responded to the braking at the end of the straight line and passed Pedrosa again, but during the braking of the first chicane, Pedrosa came back to 2nd in front of Rossi! The Italian moved up to accelerate better and braked again in Pedrosa at the entrance to the double right! Rossi on the attack took a few steps ahead of Pedrosa while Roberts passed 6th ahead of Hayden. In the process, Roberts taxes Stoner.
On lap 19, Capirossi was 8 seconds ahead of Rossi who himself had a 0.5 second margin over Pedrosa. Behind them, Roberts even passed 4th ahead of Melandri, Stoner, Hayden and Nakano who now also threatens the Kentucky Kid! Rossi, completely overwhelmed by Pedrosa’s attacks, pulls out the heavy artillery and slowly but surely distances the young Spaniard … Hopkins passes 9th in front of Edwards. In front of them, Stoner passes 5th in front of Melandri.
On the 20th lap, behind Capirossi, Rossi, as usual, the fastest at the end of the race with worn tires seems to have taken the measure of Pedrosa. Behind them, Roberts is still closely followed by Stoner and Melandri who let loose Hayden under direct threat from Nakano with Hopkins a few lengths away..
At the start of the last lap, Capirossi still assures. Rossi is still the fastest on the track and lets go of Pedrosa, while Roberts has taken a few steps ahead of Stoner and Melandri. At the end of the straight, Nakano attacks Hayden under braking, passes the American but pulls away and has to let him pick up the slack! When braking in the chicane, Melandri came back to 5th in front of Stoner. Hopkins almost returned to Nakano’s wheel and Vermeulen passed 12th ahead of Tamada.
The podium is now secured with the single rider of Capirossi who erases the straight line with a wheelie, the breathtaking final of Rossi and the beautiful performance of the young rookie Pedrosa. Roberts, who also had a superb finish, contained Melandri. Stoner had ensured then Hopkins passed in front of Nakano, the two men having passed Hayden who made his worst result of the season…
Capirossi therefore won with unchallenged domination its second victory of the season over the Ducati, its 7th in the premier class. Rossi took the very important points for 2nd place and Pedrosa completed the podium. Roberts always in high spirits finished 4th, Melandri 5th, Stoner 6th, Hopkins 7th, Nakano 8th, Hayden big loser of the day finished 9th, Edwards 10th, Elias 11th, Vermeulen 12th, Tamada 13th, De Puniet 14th and Checa 15th.
In the championship, Hayden retains the lead with 201 points but loses 9 points from his lead over Pedrosa 2nd (176), and 13 over Rossi who moved back to 3rd with 163 points ahead of Melandri 4th (161). Capirossi 5th comes back to 151 points, then Stoner is 6th (101), Roberts 7th (92) and Edwards 8th (90). De Puniet is 16th with 23 points.
On the brands side, Honda leads with 262 points ahead of Yamaha (201), Ducati (160), Suzuki (101), KR211V (92) and Kawasaki (83).
With 377 points, the Repsol Honda team leads comfortably ahead of Camel Yamaha (253), Fortuna Honda (225), Ducati Marlboro (215), Rizla Suzuki (144), Honda LCR (101), Kawasaki (98), Roberts (92) , Tech 3 Yamaha (74), Konica Minolta Honda (67) and Pramac D’Antin Ducati (22).
They explain themselves…
Capirossi (1st) : "Friday morning, I would say after the session that nothing was working and that if it continued, I was going to come home because no one was doing well! We have changed a lot of things on my bike and we found good solutions to go fast. I was then able to simulate a race with a good pace during the following practice. About our plan today, I talked a lot with my mechanics and we said to ourselves that I was going to try to start well and that I would then do my best during the first laps … When I saw that I was driving ahead with each lap, I was very impressed! I have never had a bike that worked so well and I want to sincerely thank my team and everyone who participated, my sponsors. This set still works great !"
Rossi (2nd) : "I’m happy because we won some important points over Nicky. When you start from pole position you want to try to win but today Loris was too fast … My start was not the best, but I was quickly second. I did my best, but Loris was the fastest from the start, and very consistent. I tried to do my best to stay close to him, in case his tires started to slip, but he was very consistent until the end and with each lap his lead was increasing … We had some problems with the temperature this afternoon and we will try to resolve them this Monday for the next five races … Apart from that, we had a good battle with Dani with 4 or 5 good overtaking and I’m happy to be second: it’s a good result !"
Pedrosa (3rd) : "It was a difficult race, because I started from 9th place on the grid and these two men [Capirossi and Rossi, NDLR] had already gone ahead as I regained positions. When I arrived in the leading group, Capirossi had already started in front. I don’t think anyone could stay with him today anyway. I think 2nd place was within my reach, but after we fought for 2nd place I missed a turn and wasted almost a second that I couldn’t win back. In the last laps, I then tried to finish 3rd, because I was too far for 2nd place. Anyway, I want to thank my whole team !"
Hayden (9th) : "You know, I don’t really like this track … But I got off to a really good start, then for 7 or 8 laps I was in the top 3 or 4. Then I was unlucky and made me go back to the top. It’s difficult because in the last 16 races I’ve been on the podium 14 times! But today was a bad day and we will have to fight again … In fact, I had some clutch problems and in the last few laps I had no more acceleration. I also made the choice of the tires, so I’m just blaming myself for the poor result … These Monday and Tuesday we have a big practice session. This is the last opportunity to test before the last races, and we will check everything: the tires, the bike and also the rider who will have to work on a few things…."
