In keeping with England’s reputation, there were concerns that the rain could disrupt practice and the race. But the two days of testing took place in dry weather, as well as the races of the three categories. Only the warm up on Sunday morning was well watered, undoubtedly to preserve the green of the English grass bordering the track.

125

It was a very domineering Dovizioso who took pole after reigning over the two days of testing. Beside him on the front row is Barbera, who set a time very close to the poleman, then Kallio and Corsi at 5/10. In second row, Ui, Lorenzo, Locatelli and Simon achieved very close times. Bautista, Simoncelli, Jenkner and Giansanti form the third row. We have to go to the 13th fastest time to overtake the second difference from pole. Mike Di Meglio qualifies 16th 1.26 seconds behind Dovizioso while Stoner is still forfeited this race. In the warm-up, on a wet track, it was Simoncelli, winner in the rain at Jerez, who once again demonstrated his skill in these conditions. Nieto and Bautista follow, the only ones in the top five in the provisional standings who are fast on a wet track, then Giansanti and Laverty, wild card and local of the stage, thus broken with the "so British" conditions of this warm up. Locatelli made the 13th time, Dovizioso the 15th in the morning.

Departure

It was Dovizioso who took the lead ahead of Barbera, Kallio, Locatelli, Corsi, Bautista, Nieto from 14th position, Ui and Lai. Dovizioso started to force the downhill and immediately gained a few lengths. Barbera and Nieto fall from the 2nd corner trying to keep pace with Dovizioso! Barbera’s crash only further increases Dovizioso’s advantage gained early in the descent, as Nieto’s motorcycle rolls over right in the middle of the riders and also causes a hole, luckily not hitting anyone. Halfway through, we can already talk about Dovizioso hunting. Kallio leads her ahead of Locatelli, Corsi and Bautista, themselves having widened a gap due to the fall of Nieto on Lorenzo, Ui, Simoncelli, Lai, Jenkner, Talmacsi, Giansanti, Simon, Perugini and Borsoi. Locatelli passed 2nd ahead of Kallio and Ui took 6th place from Simoncelli. Locatelli quickly takes a step ahead of Kallio, trying to catch up with Dovizioso who goes on his own.

At the first passage on the line, in favor of the straight line, Kallio rejoins Locatelli, reforming the group of four pilots launched in pursuit of Dovizioso. Di Meglio is then 24th. Lorenzo passed Ui and Simoncelli, the three men breaking away from the "peloton" to try in their turn to get back on the lead. The sun is reappearing on Donington, which can only further favor Dovizioso, who is uncomfortable in the rain but particularly fast in the dry. Ui passed Lorenzo back to 6th position. On the second lap, Dovizioso drives home the point with the fastest lap, followed by the group of four, Locatelli, Kallio, Bautista and Corsi, then Ui, Lorenzo and Simoncelli. Bautista passes Kallio at the end of the descent, and Simoncelli passes Lorenzo at the same place. Kallio delays his braking at the entrance to the chicane and passes Bautista again, followed by Corsi who goes inside the Spaniard at the next turn.

On lap 3, Dovizioso, once again setting the fastest time, continued to increase his lead over Locatelli, Kallio, Corsi and Bautista, then the trio Ui, Simoncelli and Lorenzo. Jenkner leads the peloton ahead of Lai, Perugini, Giansanti and Di Meglio 13th well back. Locatelli pushes again on the descent and releases Kallio, Corsi and Bautista.

On lap 4 Dovizioso set the fastest lap again, Locatelli was a few lengths ahead of Kallio, Corsi and Bautista, Lorenzo also took a few lengths from Simoncelli and Jenkner, who joined this group and passed Ui. At the end of the descent, Simoncelli does not manage to pass the last curve, goes beyond the curb and falls. Bautista passes 4th in front of Corsi, then 3rd in front of Kallio at the next turn. In the 5th lap, Dovizioso is still alone 1st and still goes down the best time, Locatelli alone 2nd, Bautista loose Corsi and Kallio, Lorenzo alone 6th seems to come back on the trio which precedes him, then follow Ui, Jenkner, Giansanti, Rodriguez, Perugini, Talmacsi, Lai, Simon, Borsoi and Di Meglio 16th. Halfway through, Bautista joined Locatelli and Lorenzo still climbs back on Kallio and Corsi.

On lap 6, Bautista posted the best time thanks to his comeback on Locatelli. On the next lap, Bautista, again setting the fastest time, passes Locatelli under braking to begin the descent. Kallio and Corsi are released and Lorenzo gradually comes back to them. Bautista makes the break on Locatelli as soon as the descent.

On the 8th lap, Bautista again posted the best time, beating the one achieved by Cecchinello in 2002, but only regained a short time on Dovizioso who maintained his pace. Locatelli, on the other hand, cannot keep up with the Spaniard. Behind, Kallio and Corsi see the threat Lorenzo approaching. Jenkner rolls with Ui ahead of Giansanti, Rodriguez, Simon, Perugini, Borsoi and Di Meglio, who returned to 14th. Lorenzo, he joined Corsi and quickly passes him, immediately dropping him to return to Kallio who had taken advantage of the fight to detach himself slightly.

In the 9th lap, the positions remain unchanged in the lead. Lorenzo took advantage of the suction on Kallio to pass him under braking at the end of the straight line, immediately setting off on the descent. In the 10th lap, Dovizioso is 2.5 s ahead of Bautista, 4 s over Locatelli, 7.5 s over Lorenzo and Kallio, 8 s over Corsi, 13.5 s over Jenkner, Ui and Giansanti, 17.7 s on Simon, 18.1 s on Di Meglio up to 11th, 18.5 s on Rodriguez, Borsoi and Perugini, and almost 20 s on Talmacsi. Before the 11th lap, Corsi brakes Kallio at the right hairpin to pass 5th, not wanting to let Lorenzo go ahead. Kallio returned to 5th in front of Corsi on the next lap, leaving Lorenzo to take off. Di Meglio then passed 10th, Rodriguez and him having passed Julian Simon.

On lap 12, Ui brakes at the end of the straight at Jenkner and returns to 7th. Jenkner returns Ui on the next round. On the 15th lap, Dovizioso is 3.7 s ahead of Bautista, 5.1 s on Locatelli, 9.4 s on Lorenzo, 10.5 s on Kallio, 11.5 s on Corsi, 16 s on Jenkner, Ui and Giansanti, 22.5 s on Borsoi past 10th, 23 s on Simon returned to 11th ahead of Di Meglio, Rodriguez and Perugini at 24 s and Pellino at 26 s. At this point in the race, Locatelli is driving faster than Bautista and gradually gets the Spaniard up, but makes a mistake and loses 4 / 10ths suddenly. Kallio let go of Corsi and comes back to Lorenzo on lap 16. Nothing changed until lap 18 which saw Giansanti retire as he struggled with Jenkner and Ui for 7th place. On lap 19, Locatelli returned to Bautista was less than a second behind the Spaniard! On lap 20, Dovizioso in control kept the lead with Bautista at 3.5s, Locatelli at 4s, Lorenzo and Kallio at 10.5s. Corsi at 16.7 s sees Jenkner return at 17 s, Ui is at 19 s, Borsoi and Simon at 23 s, then Rodriguez and Di Meglio 12th at 25 s.

On lap 21, Locatelli returned to Bautista’s aspiration and Kallio to Lorenzo’s. Locatelli stayed in Bautista’s wheel for two laps, but lost the rear and crashed halfway on lap 23! Thus, at the start of the last lap, Dovizioso is the only leader, Bautista only 2nd and Lorenzo and Kallio are fighting for the 3rd step of the podium! Kallio was glued to the wheel of Lorenzo who delayed all his braking and closed the doors entering the corners early, managing to maintain the advantage until the end. Dovizioso therefore wins after a single rider as rare as remarkable in the category, Bautista is 2nd and makes his best result of the season and his first podium, Lorenzo 3rd, Kallio 4th also makes his best result, just like Corsi 5th, completing also an excellent result for his Scot team with victory and 5th place, Jenkner 6th, Ui 7th, Simon 8th, Borsoi 9th, Pellino 10th, Perugini 11th, Pesek 12th, Talmacsi 13th, Lai 14th and Di Meglio who struggled to finish saves the point of 15th place.

In the championship, excellent business for Dovizioso whose two main adversaries went to the fault. He now leads with 163 points ahead of Locatelli 131, Barbera 129, Stoner 104, Nieto 88, Lorenzo 84, Jenkner 73 and Giansanti 71. Di Meglio is 16th with 28 points, four white results in 9 races…

MotoGP

It was Rossi who took pole on his favorite circuit, 4/10 ahead of Gibernau and Capirossi. Bayliss, Edwards and Hayden form the second row ahead of Checa, Biaggi and Barros, victims of a crash on the second day of testing which severely hampered the tuning of the No.1 HRC machine. Xaus, Melandri and Nakano are in 4th place. In the warm-up, still on a wet track, it was Bayliss who was the fastest in front of Gibernau, Hayden, Edwards, Checa, Xaus, Capirossi, Roberts, Byrne, Barros and Rossi, who had to pray for the race to take place on the dry !

Departure Rossi made the hole shot, directly threatened by Capirossi, Gibernau struggling to keep 3rd place under pressure from Bayliss! Capirossi is doing spectacularly outside Rossi on the first right of the descent, being ideally placed inside for the next left: Capirossi takes the lead! Meanwhile, Checa took 4th position from Bayliss, followed by Edwards, Biaggi, Hayden, Xaus, Barros, Abe, Hodgson, Hofmann, Nakano, Fabrizio and Tamada. Gibernau sneaks inside Rossi and goes 2nd, Hayden attempting and pulling an outside in the same curve on Biaggi! When braking from the hairpin to the right at the end of the circuit, Rossi passes Gibernau again under braking, Edwards attempting the same maneuver on Bayliss without success.

On the first pass, Capirossi still leads. Rossi is glued to his wheel. Gibernau, Bayliss, Edwards and Biaggi follow a little further ahead of Checa, Hayden, Barros, Xaus, Abe and Roberts. When braking in the chicane, Rossi came close to Capirossi, Gibernau even further inside, and Rossi came out on top followed by Gibernau! When braking from the left hairpin, Edwards passed Bayliss for 4th place. Checa who tried to do the same on Biaggi widens and sees Hayden pass.

Rossi made the forcing on the 2nd round, making the hole in front of Gibernau. Edwards, seeing the two men leave, passed the two Ducatis on the descent, just like Hayden who passed 6th! Barros shows his wheel to Biaggi after passing Checa. On the 3rd lap, Rossi leads a few lengths in front of Gibernau while Edwards, author of the best time, climbs back up! Capirossi and Bayliss followed by Hayden, then another gap before seeing Biaggi, Barros, Checa and Xaus. Barros passes Biaggi in the hairpin on the left which commands the straight line. Checa takes advantage of what Biaggi, by wanting to resist, has widened, to also pass the Roman.

On the 4th lap, Rossi leads in front of Gibernau who sees Edwards, again author of the best time and beating the 2003 Rossi record, stuck to his wheel. Capirossi and Bayliss see Hayden join them. When braking in the chicane, Bayliss, who seemed more at ease, passed Capirossi for 4th place. Under pressure from Edwards, Gibernau picked up the pace and came back to Rossi. When braking at the end of the 5th straight line, Edwards again the fastest on the track passes his teammate! Biaggi continues to downgrade: passed by Xaus 9th and Hopkins 10th, he is 12th under the threat of Roberts! Hayden passes 5th in front of Capirossi. Rossi had the fastest lap in the race on lap 6, Edwards let go of Gibernau after a daring attempt by the Spaniard at the entrance to the chicane. On lap 8, Edwards became the first man to turn in Donington under 1.30 ’’! Barros, he passed 6th in front of Capirossi. During the 9th lap, a few drops of rain raised concerns that the race would stop, but there was a false alarm. As a result, Gibernau came back in contact with Edwards who drove 7/10 slower than on the previous lap. Abe passed 12th ahead of Biaggi. In the 10th lap, Rossi was 1.3 s ahead of Edwards, 1.6 s on Gibernau, 3.5 s on Bayliss, 5 s on Hayden, 8.6 s on Barros, 10.7 s on Capirossi, 11 , 6 s on Checa, 12.8 s on Hopkins, 14.2 s on Xaus, 16.1 s on Hodgson, 18.3 s on Abe, 17.2 s on Biaggi descending into hell, 21.2 s on Tamada and 24.1 on Nakano. Abe returns to Hodgson and doubles him. Gibernau is increasingly pressing on Edwards. Abe, in full recovery, offers Ruben Xaus for 10th place on the 13th lap! Hayden glues Bayliss back in this round and instantly shows himself to be pressing on his compatriot.

On lap 14, Checa passed 7th ahead of Capirossi. When braking in the chicane, Hayden passed Bayliss for 4th place. On lap 15 Rossi was 1.5 seconds ahead of Edwards and Gibernau and more than 5 seconds over Hayden. Biaggi, at 27 s, sees his teammate Tamada come back to him, him at 29 s. In the 16th lap, Hayden left Bayliss behind and Hopkins returned to Capirossi. Rossi widens the gap on Edwards, who goes over 2s.

On the 18th lap, Hayden saw Bayliss return to his wheel. Transcended, the Australian takes risks on the descent, misses his entry to the right, goes out into the grass on a slope but manages to stay on his wheels and takes to the track again! On lap 19 Rossi again turned 1 / 10th faster than Edwards, who was also very consistent, outdistancing Gibernau. On lap 20, Rossi was 2.6 seconds ahead of Edwards. Something to see coming, but not enough for him to ensure ten laps from the finish. Gibernau is a second further, 3.8 s from Dottore. Hayden now seems to be content with 4th place 9.9 s behind the leader, Bayliss at 13.5 s, Checa at 16.6 s, Barros at 18.3 s, Hopkins who passed Capirossi at 18.6 s, Capirex at 19.6 s, Abe at 21.9 s and the two Ducati D’Antin more than 30 seconds behind Rossi, Hodgson having passed Xaus !

On lap 22, Barros saw Abe return to his wheel after widening and letting Hopkins and Capirossi pass. Rossi, on the other hand, continues to distance Edwards tenth after tenth, relegating the American to more than 3 seconds! Abe brakes at Barros and goes 9th. On lap 24, Rossi took a lap from Fabrizio and the WCM, 4 seconds ahead of Edwards. It was then Hofmann’s turn to see Rossi take a turn on him. On lap 25, as Rossi continued to increase his lead, supercharged Abe returned to Capirossi, leaving Barros more than 3s behind him! Byrne passes Tamada on this 25th lap. Capirossi passes Hopkins again, Abe on their heels! Abe passed 8th in front of Hopkins with three laps to go. But the Japanese showed overzealousness and fell heavily following a high-side in the descent, unfortunately falling on his still fragile ribs and leaving on a stretcher! Melandri‘s package forfeit and Abe’s fall, it’s another sad weekend for Tech 3 !

At the start of the last lap, still no race instructions for Edwards aiming to promote Gibernau’s world ranking. No position will change until the finish and it is Rossi who takes his 64th victory, including 38 in the premier class in his 133rd Grand Prix! Edwards finally climbs on his first podium completed by Gibernau. Hayden is 4th, Bayliss 5th, Checa 6th, Capirossi 7th, Hopkins 8th, Barros 9th, Hodgson 10th, Xaus 11th, Biaggi 12th, Byrne 13th, Tamada 14th and Nakano 15th. We will learn that Biaggi had a big gear change problem during the warm-up lap, ending the race bloody! His mistake – and that of his team – was not to have taken his second bike before the start, leaving from the pit lane … In the championship, Rossi made the hole with 164 points ahead of Gibernau and Biaggi (142 ). With 95 points, Edwards takes 4th place at Barros 86 ahead of Hayden 83, Checa 72 and Capirossi 64 while Melandri with 57 points and forfeit from 2 races sees Tamada return with 56 points. !
