WSSP Germany: Morais, happy winner of a crazy race

Author of fourth and sixth fastest times yesterday in qualifying, Jules Cluzel and Lucas Mahias gain a place on the German starting grid thanks to the penalty imposed on Tuuli (and Calero) for irresponsible driving during the warm-up.
Our "Coq Supersportif" therefore joins the No. 32 Yamaha of poleman Sheridan Morais and the official No. 64 of Federico Caricasulo in the first row. Our championship leader climbs to the middle of the second row, just next to – and behind – Kenan Sofuoglu who is only 5 points behind in the provisional…
Departure : Caricasulo took off very quickly from the grid but Cluzel turned second behind pole-sitter Morais. In the next turn, however, Caricasulo passed our national No. 16. Sofuoglu is ahead of Mahias. Rea, Smith, Stapelford, Zanetti (replacing Rolfo for the end of the season) and Tuuli complete the top 10.
Mahias attacks Sofuoglu at the end of the 1st round but widens and must let the Turkish champion pass again. The two men momentarily lose contact with the leading trio and are followed by the peloton at the start of the second lap. In front, Morais on his brand new R6 prints his rhythm in front of Caricasulo and Cluzel who is struggling to temper his CBR !
Kenan and Lucas walk away from the peloton of Rea, Tuuli, Smith, Stapelford, West and Zanetti again. The "Number One" signs the fastest lap in the race: he is three tenths faster than the three leading men. Mahias concedes a little ground but returns to the Ninja’s asp at the end of the 3rd round !
Lucas also explodes Kenan’s record: perfectly at ease on his factory R6, our n ° 144 unleashes a new attack on n ° 1 on the outskirts of the 10th bend, this time manages to reach the rope and keep fourth place. In the process, the official signs a new lap record !
Sheridan Morais – the first South African to take pole position in Supersport – still leads on the 4th lap but he is closely marked by Caricasulo … Cluzel seems to be struggling in the stretches but is back behind in the winding. Behind him Mahias begins to honk…
Lucas reproduces his attack at the end of the 5th lap and virtually climbs on the podium. The leader of the championship is no doubt hoping that "Julo" will manage to slow down, or even beat Sofuoglu! Next target in the sights of Mahias who has just broken his own lap record: his Italian teammate.
Posted in Morais’ rear wheel from the second corner of the 1st lap, Caricasulo conscientiously maintains the pressure on the helmet of n ° 32. Mahias pretends to shift at the entrance of some corners but does not go on the attack. Cluzel manages to stay in touch.
In the 8th lap unfortunately, Lucas lost his brakes – the 10th, his favorite though! – but manages to cut in the grass and join the track a little second behind Kenan. Jules recovers his third place, a few lengths from the two leading Yamaha and just ahead of the Ninja n ° 1.
Five seconds behind Mahias are two solo riders: Tuuli and Zanetti. West, Stapelford, Rea, Gradinger and Smith are fighting for eighth place … But Gino Rea makes a mistake on the 10th lap. Sofuoglu makes a small mistake that allows Mahias to pick him up at halfway.
The experienced Sofuoglu protects himself perfectly from any Mahias attack by taking tighter trajectories. At the same time, the guy manages to climb back up to Cluzel! Seven laps from the end, Kenan passes under Jules at the entrance to the first curve but the "Frenchie" responds tit for tat, from the outside (!), In the following right !
The five-time world champion returns to our favorite No.16 in the following lap, this time taking care to block him in the first corner … The two leading Yamasas gain a little space in the operation but the Turkish man sets off again. attack and join them in the 14th round. Cluzel and Mahias are dropped by the world No. 1…
Lucas overtakes Jules in turn 10 … and completes a new record lap! Encouraged by his panelist, Lucas does not take his eyes off the Kawasaki of his best enemy in the championship. In one turn, Lucas ends up in the rear wheel of the ZX-6R.
Three laps from the end, Caricasulo then Sofuoglu easily overtake Morais! Mahias stayed behind the South African longer and overtook him in "his" turn n ° 10. There are only two laps left and Lucas is half a second behind Kenan.
Sofuoglu attacks Caricasulo in the first curve. The Italian tries to get the Turkish back on his outside in the next turn – like Cluzel a few laps earlier – but doesn’t have time and gets stuck as he approaches the third turn…
Federico has to brake a little too sharply on the angle and inevitably loses the front … Unable to avoid his young teammate, Lucas in turn falls by hitting the unfortunate Italian! Kenan saw nothing of the incident and continues his race.
Sheridan and Jules climb up on the podium again with less than two laps to lower the checkered flag … But the red flag is hoisted a few seconds later: an ambulance must take charge of Caricasulo, the race is over…
Confusion reigns when the pilots return to the pit lane: the race direction feverishly consults the World Supersport regulations to establish the final result. A time declared the winner, Sofuoglu finally finished second behind Morais while Caricasulo disappeared from the standings.
Also erased from the shelves for a few minutes, Mahias finally reached the third step of the podium. Phew! Jules Cluzel is credited with fourth place, far ahead of Niki Tuuli. Zanetti joins a fourth manufacturer in the Top 6: MV Agusta joins Yamaha, Kawasaki and Honda !
Disappointed by the shortened end of the race, worried for his teammate Caricasulo but satisfied with his phenomenal pace in the race, Lucas Mahias remains in charge of the world championship, a small point ahead of Kenan Sofuoglu (121 to 120)! The last four events promise to be hotly contested…
Behind the two leaders, Morais moved away from Cluzel: the South African – the first in history to win a World Supersport race – totaled 101 points, against 88 for our compatriot. Behind them, the counters of PJ Jacobsen and Caricasulo do not progress (respectively 68 and 51 points).
