Duel Honda NC750S Vs NC700S: Honda gives you the choice
The new Honda NC750S is very close to its predecessor NC700S, but only the 700 is accessible to A2 licenses. These two roadsters, fitted as standard with ABS and DCT, are therefore included in the 2014 Honda motorcycle catalog.. MNC compared them … Duel !
NC700S or NC750S: enough to whip a cat ?
In the presence of the old model, we actually perceive from the new silencer a sound a hint stronger. But the 745 cc twin cylinder remains particularly discreet and retains the pleasant noise of a small "pop pop" motorboat that emanates from the 670 cc..
Here again, this slight difference in tone does not in itself justify spending 300 euros more to acquire the NC750S rather than the NC700S. But it still announces a change in behavior…
The balance of the NC750S is always good: the motor is tilted forward (62 °) and placed low in the frame (tubular steel), which helps to raise the bike. The side stand being a bit high and straight on both motorcycles, users should beware of sloping ground..
After this first impression of relative lightness, the rider has to spit more into the gloves to move his motorcycle. Be careful to remember to release the parking brake, otherwise the NCs seem really, really very heavy !
To engage first gear – via the right stalk – it is essential to raise the side. Otherwise, the motorcycle remains in neutral but does not stall like most "classic" motorcycles do. Less abrupt than the clean cut of the engine, the impossibility of passing the first gear can be more frustrating, even embarrassing towards his friends or his future conquest…
Disturbing the very first time, the absence of a clutch lever and selector subsequently gives off a pleasant feeling of simplicity: like on a scooter, the pilot simply swivels the handle to start !
As smooth as they are fast, the double-clutch transmissions continuously propel motorcycles. The reports climb without realizing it and the two NCs quickly increase to 55 km / h in fifth. As on a maxi scooter this time, it is imperative to monitor your speedometer out of the corner of your eye…
In "normal" use – as opposed to that of the journalist watching for the slightest appearance or disappearance of a bar on the tachometer! – We don’t care if reading the engine speed is delicate and imprecise. We would much prefer that the speed be displayed roughly because casually, the NC galloped well … The 750 especially, but we will come back to it. !
With their long wheelbase, the NCs are both a little clumsy for medium-displacement roadsters (read our). The slightly flatter profile of the Z8 Interact mounted on the 750 accentuates the observation compared to the 700, paved during this duel of BT-023.
At the very beginning, the handling of the two motorcycles can also surprise due to the lack of clutch. So no way to take it back just enough to relieve the engine during a U-turn, for example. To measure its power, we can only rely on the throttle, which fortunately is precise.
When cold, the two engines – under automatic starters – tend to make their machine trot on first gear and not sufficiently cut off its momentum in upper gears. But these phenomena fade quickly.
The crossing of the first roundabouts and intersections can also be complicated by involuntary downshifts in "automatic" D or S mode. If you try to accelerate at the same time, jerks are sensitive … Fortunately, the system is ultra fast and its operating rhythm is easily integrated by the pilot, who then knows how to better manage the throttle..
If necessary, the human can momentarily take control of the machine to force it down or up a gear momentarily, via the triggers of the left stalk. The most averse to change – so why buy a DCT ?! – can even drive "manually", which is engaged with the right trigger this time.
In this mode, however, we run the risk of reaching the switch, which intervenes as quickly on the NC750S as on the NC700S at around 6500 rpm. The engine and its pot expressing itself timidly, it is not easy to drive by ear: for more comfort, MNC therefore recommends driving "automatically".
