Face to face Kawasaki VN 1700 Voyager / Triumph Rocket III Touring: 4,000 cc for the holidays !
Do you like to go far, long and on the couple? But you don’t know (or don’t want to) travel light ? No problem: Site has tested two ships on the road for you: Kawasaki VN 1700 Voyager and Triumph Rocket III Touring … Duel XXL !
On the road: comfort or sensations ?
Leaving in a muggy heat on the handlebars of our asphalt vessels, the thunder does not take long to rumble when we set sail … The rain is so strong that the speed does not exceed 80-90 km / h … such conditions soon highlighted the glaring difference in protection between the Rocket and the Voyager !
On the English, the pilot is certainly quickly soaked but he retains a correct field of vision in the event of a flood. On the Japanese, it’s the other way around: the protection remarkably protects against bad weather, but there comes a time when you can’t really see anything through the windshield … To do it right, you would need a wiper. , or at least apply a water repellent product before leaving. The driver’s knees, the only part of the body exposed on the Kawa, do not take long to be soaked and the water runs into the boots … it refreshes !
With the return of the sun and dry roads, the smile reappears as the pace picks up. Quickly, the Triumph tries to excuse its lower overall comfort by the performance of its 3-cylinder with generous breath and delightful vigor. Angry, the Englishwoman can even hang a small 200 km / h meter, which is also quite accurate according to the GPS.
For its part, the VN 1700 is less well off: the 73 hp are struggling to propel the nearly 600 kg in running order of the machine with its passengers and their luggage … Nevertheless, the Voyager holds a cruising speed 140-150 km / h on the motorway, which should protect you from radar because the odometer is quite optimistic.
On fifth gear, with space, the VN 1700 can exceed 170 km / h but it then takes care of making people understand that this is not really its cup of tea … The sixth is a Overdrive reserved for the highway so as not to consume too much. Finally, its cruise control is quite pleasant and will allow you to keep your license by refusing to stall faster than 131 km / h on the GPS !
As the kilometers go by, our two GTs provide top-level saddle comfort. Their windshields provide good protection, without generating turbulence or creating depression which sometimes pushes the pilot forward. On the other hand, our two motorcycles both suffer from a rather disappointing autonomy for machines of this type..
The explanation lies in particular in the modest capacity of their tanks: 20 liters for the Kawa and 22.3 for the Triumph. With rather greedy mechanics – which is understandable given their engine capacity! -, refueling must therefore intervene fairly early (around 180-200 km). The Rocket III consumed an average of 7.5 l / 100 km with peaks at 9 l / 100 km, while the Voyager engulfed 8.2 l / 100 km with peaks at 10.6 l / 100 km. Something to familiarize fairly quickly with your gas station attendant at the corner of the street !
