MV Agusta Dragster 800 test: it’s Brutale !
Based on its Brutale 800, MV Agusta is expanding its range with the Dragster, whose look and name evoke the Ducati Diavel … But a road and track test shows that in reality, this new bike is more roadster than power cruiser.
A beautiful toy
When riding the Dragster 800, the driving position and the good ergonomics of the controls are a pleasant surprise. The rear footrests encourage tilting the bust forward, but the pressure on the wrists is not too pronounced and the knees easily find their place around the 16.6-liter tank. All of these factors contribute to a good grip of the motorcycle.
The saddle height of 811 mm will suit most riders, unlike the seating comfort, which is relatively firm in use. The possible passenger will have to be content with a minimalist and slippery folding seat, as well as tiny retaining "handles" hidden at the rear..
Contact, starter: the "Tre Pistoni" delivers a pleasant and rhythmic sound via its three characteristic tailpipes assembled superimposed on the right side. From the first turns of the wheels, the Dragster 800 demonstrates excellent stability and good overall handling..
Its turning radius is not very short, but is sufficient to maintain good maneuverability in an urban cycle. Our test begins on a still wet road towards the famous route des crêtes, which connects Cassis to La Ciotat via Cap Canaille, famous for its view of the Calanques massif and the Mediterranean..
At low speeds, we can only appreciate the fine and precise dosage of the acceleration managed by the electronic ride-by-wire system: what progress compared to the first versions! The jerks previously felt at low speed on a trickle of gas are a thing of the past, as are the "sticking" phenomena felt on previous generations of 3-leg gearboxes..
The time to fit the Pirelli Diablo Rosso II tires in temperature and the pace increases noticeably. With the usual paces, the front axle is precise and easy to swing from one side to the other in the series of turns. The agility is unsurprisingly slightly less than on the Brutale 800, as the rear tire is reduced from 180 to 200mm wide on the Dragster..
However, this liveliness lower than that of the roadster is not really crippling at a coiled pace. As the rate increases as the bitumen dries, the relative flexibility of the suspensions in the original setting appears on the other hand more restrictive….
The 43mm Marzocchi fork dives a little too hard under braking and the Sachs shock reacts sharply to stress, further disrupting heading as the wider rear tire tends to understeer the whole thing in turns. fast.
Fortunately, it suffices to use the weight of your body to correct the shot and help the Dragster to maintain the desired trajectory. The braking is for its part of excellent quality, with precise dosage, bite and very satisfactory power at the front..
The quick release of the ABS when using the rear brake tarnishes this excellent picture. Too bad, because the control unit is almost completely transparent at the front, even in the wet.
