Austrian GP – Dovizioso (3rd): ” Our choice of tires was not the right one ”
Beaten by two thousandths of a second by Marquez in qualifying on Saturday (!), Andrea Dovizioso was aiming for victory and nothing else on Sunday. But his “ bad ” choice of tires – yet identical to the majority of the field – forced him to settle for the third step of the podium..
Andrea Dovizioso, Ducati (2nd in qualifying and 3rd in race): "There are positives and negatives about our weekend. On the one hand we were fast, in fact our bike is working wonderfully on this track, but it seems to be the case on the other tracks. In other words, it’s positive for the championship and for the future ".
“Unfortunately our tire choice was not the right one, ten laps from the end I couldn’t keep up with them, I was losing too much grip. If I could go back, I would obviously go for a soft one. at the back. But I think that’s not the only element of explanation. Let’s say it’s a set of things (…) I’m really disappointed, because I didn’t expect it. – I felt pretty good there, I was very strong under braking. But Jorge was too, that’s why I couldn’t pass it ".
"I can’t wait for us to get to Silvestone. It’s a demanding track, but last year I won there thanks to a well-crafted strategy. We weren’t necessarily the fastest, we So we’ll have to work hard. We’ll also have to watch the video, but I’m sure we’ll be strong. ".
Site analysis: Flamboyant winner of the previous edition of the Austrian Motorcycle Grand Prix, Andrea Dovizioso arrived on conquered ground … without nabbing a big head or inflating his pecs outrageously, this is not the style of this Italian, but all the same !
In 2017, the n ° 04 Ducati was one of the few riders to hold high against Marc Marquez in the race, and the last to challenge him for the world title: until the grand final in Valence … which "Desmo Dovi" had long remained behind "Jorgueil" yet summoned by the Ducati team to let its leader pass !
Yesterday, throughout the first half of the Austrian race, Dovizioso supporters saw red again: in the eighth lap in particular, the Italian Stallion could erase – for good – the fastest race lap scored by Marc Marquez, it remained restrained by his teammate, still and always planted in his rims !
The spirits calmed down when the two factory Ducati riders managed to pick up the Honda # 93 together. But the double-bred hopes of Dovi – winner last year at the Red Bull Ring, but also the last GP in Brno – quickly gave way to disillusionment…
By gnawing his brakes behind Lorenzo, Dovizioso tapped his "medium" tires more and was unable to keep pace with his Spanish teammate and his more enduring "soft" tires (!) At the end of the race. Relegated to the "04th" place in the provisional, the n ° 04 is already counting on the next round at Silverstone (GB) to recover his status as the first Ducati rider. Veni, Vidi, Dovi ?
