Valencia Grand Prix Moto GP 2019: the riders take stock of the season
Statements by the main riders at the finish of the 2019 Valencia Moto GP Grand Prix, the last race of the season.
Marc Marquez, official Honda n ° 93 (2nd in qualifying, 1st in race and "triple" 2019 world champion)
"This victory is a perfect end to the season ! I put a little more pressure on my gold helmet so I had to be smarter! We did exactly what we wanted to do: we won the team title and we are therefore three times world champion this year (driver, manufacturer and team). The driver’s title is always the first objective but I was happy to participate in the team victory, not only for them but also for Jorge who was a great champion, a great rival and an excellent teammate. It will be difficult to do better than this year because we drove perfectly ".
Fabio Quartararo, Yamaha satellite n ° 20 (1st in qualifying, 2nd in race, best beginner 2019, best independent and 5th in the championship)
“I knew Marc would be very strong, but if we couldn’t win then I would love second place – and being the first Yamaha rider is a nice bonus too. We weren’t that far from winning so I can be very proud of the result. It’s an incredible end to the season. In 2018, a lot of people told me that I did not deserve a place in MotoGP and that I was not ready for it. But I think that with seven podiums and six pole positions, I showed them they were wrong! I am very happy with this season and the whole team can be proud of it ".
Jack Miller, Ducati satellite n ° 43 (3rd in qualifying, 3rd in race and 8th in the championship)
"Today I was consistent. I was chasing Fabio, I saw him make a few mistakes halfway through the race and I felt like I was coming back to him with a second wind. But the first two (Marquez and Quartararo, editor’s note) had an incredible race, flawlessly, while we were all attacking. It was a long but fun race ".
Andrea Dovizioso, official Ducati n ° 04 (6th in qualifying, 4th in race and 2nd in the championship)
"Overall I’m happy with our speed in the race, it was consistent and at the end the gap with Marquez wasn’t that big. I tried to catch up with Miller for third place, but he was driving really well and he was faster. He deserves the podium. I am happy with the way we have finished the season as we have been quick in Sepang and here in Valencia. We confirmed a solid second place, unfortunately with a very big gap on Marquez at the classification but also with a significant gap compared to third place, despite my two white results in Barcelona and Silverstone which are not our fault ".
Alex Rins, official Suzuki n ° 42 (8th in qualifying, 5th in race and 4th in the championship)
"This year has been really good, I fought for 3rd place in the championship. Today I tried to take it back and I managed to beat Viñales, my closest rival. I fought with it. Dovizioso to the finish line, but it was very difficult to overtake him. Let’s keep working and get ready for the new season! "
Maverick Viñales, official Yamaha n ° 12 (4th in qualifying, 6th in race and 3rd in the championship)
“My main goal was to try to finish third in the championship. That’s what I achieved today and I wasn’t thinking too much about being on the podium or winning because my goal was to finish the race well. It was a tough test, I had a lot of trouble with the rear grip, it’s a problem you sometimes encounter and it still is today, so we’ll have to deal with it. Today I absolutely wanted to finish close to Rins and score as many points as possible. I am very happy to be the first Yamaha rider in the championship and again in the top 3. I can’t wait to test the new bike. this new test period with a lot of motivation and enthusiasm is what matters most. We have some very important tests coming up here and in Jerez and I feel very comfortable on the bike. So we have to recreate a good atmosphere and keep fighting, because I think that with Yamaha we can do a very good job this winter and be ready for next year ".
Joan Mir, official Suzuki n ° 36 (7th in qualifying, 7th in race and 12th in the championship)
"This race was a little frustrating for me because I didn’t have the same feelings as during practice. It’s a shame, but I was still able to fight well by staying close to the Top 5 and the drivers who have won the races this year. I thought I could give more in this race, but I’m still happy. This first year has been really good and I’m looking forward to the next one. I also can’t wait to start the test of the week next ".
Valentino Rossi, official Yamaha n ° 46 (12th in qualifying, 8th in race and 7th in the championship)
"Even more than the weather, what was difficult were the grip problems. It had happened to us before this year. I didn’t have enough rear grip and after a few laps I had to slow down because my tire had lost a lot of performance. During the second half of the season we suffered a lot and we couldn’t fix this problem. It was pretty much the same today, so we’ll have to work on Tuesday to start the new season well. We have two important tests here and in Jerez before the end of the year. We hope to have good weather and we will try to improve. Yamaha will have provided us with new parts and we will have a new leader in the team. These tests will be important in understanding how to work and we will try to come back stronger next year ".
Jorge Lorenzo, official Honda n ° 99 (16th in qualifying, 13th in race, 19th in the championship and now retired)
“It was a special day… On the grid I had a very different feeling than in all my other races. I was certainly more careful because the conditions were very difficult and I wanted to finish my last race. I am happy to help the Repsol Honda team win the team championship after an amazing season from Marc. I want to thank everyone at Honda. They treated me with the utmost respect and professionalism. I wish them all the best for the future ".
Danilo Petrucci, official Ducati n ° 9 (10th in qualifying, retirement in the race and 6th in the championship)
"It’s a shame because it was an important race for the team. Unfortunately, from the start the assists at the start didn’t work and I immediately lost a lot of positions. I regained some on the laps My pace was really good, but unfortunately after overtaking Rossi I crashed without understanding why. I’m sorry to end the championship this way, but it’s still the best season of my career in MotoGP. I know that I still have to improve in a number of areas, but I can’t wait to start the new season ".
Johann Zarco, Honda satellite n ° 5 (13th in qualifying, retirement in the race and 18th in the championship)
“I’m fine, I think the injury could have been worse. It was a tough race. I knew it was going to be long so I thought when the tire wore out maybe I would have the right pace. I was around tenth place which is good. After passing Pol Espargaro I tried to speed up. I saw Danilo Petrucci crash and I don’t know if that distracted me a bit, but I crashed a bit later. I was slipping and thought it was a shame I lost the race, then I didn’t pay attention and Iker Lecuona‘s bike hit me . I had a lot of pain in my left ankle and I was scared, but ultimately it’s not that bad because there are no broken bones. I have to do more exams tomorrow, but I think that’s okay. It’s a shame to end the season this way ".
