Timetables and challenges of the Andalusia MotoGP 2020 Grand Prix
The same players are still playing: all the MotoGP riders return to the Jerez circuit to compete in the unprecedented Andalusia Grand Prix a week after the Spanish GP, opening round in the premier class won by Fabio Quartararo. All the pilots? Yes: including Marc Marquez who comes out of the operating table with a barely fixed shoulder fracture! Presentation, timetables and statements.
A Hollywood screenwriter would not have imagined as many twists and turns as the Spanish Grand Prix last Sunday in Jerez. Excitement, joys, sorrows, satisfaction, doubts, euphoria and pain: it is a concentrate of raw emotions that the first MotoGP race of the 2020 season offered in the space of 45 minutes !

Covid-19 requires, this opening took place without spectators and with a small number of people in the paddock. The obligation to wear a mask and to respect the "social" distancing advocated by the French government (instead of "physical distancing", less condescending) have created an almost unique atmosphere in this space usually teeming with life.
In these particular circumstances, the record pole and the victory of Fabio Quartararo on his Yamaha inevitably resonated less strongly in the Andalusian circuit. But certainly not in the media or on TV: Canal +, the only MotoGP broadcaster in France, broke an audience record – 814,000 viewers – when the Niçois became the fourth French to win in the premier category !
Even the fall does not stop Marc Marquez !
For the Spaniards, the party was less crazy … Firstly because of the package of Alex Rins, injured in the shoulder following a bad fall on his Suzuki. But it was above all the violent high side of Catalan Marc Marquez that threw a chill (Iberian, obviously!): The reigning champion flew four laps from the finish, while he was looking for the opening on Viñales for 2nd place after a meteoric rise.
Result: fracture of the right humerus, passage on the billiards table the following Tuesday and a double "zero" which was announced inevitable because of the proximity between the first two races of the year. The medical profession had also ruled in this direction: the Honda official will only be able to resume the handlebars at best from the GP of the Czech Republic, on August 9….

Except that "reasonable" and "Marc Marquez" are two contradictory terms! The Cervera native has decided to brave the pain, the risks – and common sense, some will say – by attempting to enter the race on Sunday. The eight-time world champion – stung by Quartararo’s rise to power – has been declared fit by circuit doctors.
In agreement with the HRC, however, he will only get back on his bike from Saturday to give an additional respite to his just reduced fracture: feat or unconsciousness, MNC lets you judge! One thing is certain anyway: this courageous comeback shows that the No.93 does not take the competition lightly. !
Concerns around the 2020 Yamaha engine…
For Yamaha, the first race of the season demonstrated the good general balance of the M1 which took the first two places on the podium with Quartararo and Viñales. Fifth at 6.668 seconds behind his teammate, Morbidelli could even have claimed a better performance without the untimely triggering of his airbag during the race. !
On the side of Valentino Rossi, on the other hand, the results are more contrasted and even worrying: the "Doctor" literally skated on the spot throughout the weekend, before having to abandon the race due to a mechanical problem to date. identified by Yamaha engine manufacturers. What to wonder about the reliability of the 4-cylinder 2020…
Would the mechanics of Iwata be too extensive to reduce the gap of Vmax on Ducati and Honda – without much success for that matter? This damage, which occurred at the worst moment, may give rise to fear, especially as Rossi and Viñales would have changed their engine in an unusual way last week: three times for n ° 12! However, the allowance was lowered to only five blocks per driver in reaction to the shortening of the season, from 20 to 13 races! The room for maneuver is reduced accordingly…
Zarco takes its marks on the Ducati
At Ducati, Andrea Dovizioso saved the podium 5.9 seconds behind the winner after being fairly discreet during practice. The Italian, still in negotiations with the Reds for 2021, manages as usual to play "placed" to score big points, despite his fractured shoulder last month during a motocross race.
This third place signed in front of his future teammate Jack Miller is also a strong signal to the attention of Ducati decision makers: no offense to some, "Dovi" remains to this day the best representative of the Italian brand! Accessing their requests to extend their partnership makes sense under these conditions.
Yes, but voila: the Reds openly doubt the ability of No. 4 to take them a further step to finally return to the title. Ducati admits it without embarrassment: the performances of its other riders – Johann Zarco and Francesco Bagnaia – will weigh in the final decision.
The French rider says he is ready to take back the official Desmosedici if “Dovi” withdraws for lack of agreement with Ducati. There remains a small "detail": Johann must first perform on his Ducati Avintia, which he failed to do last Sunday in Jerez (11th 25 seconds behind the leader). "If he wants this bike, he must deserve it", tempers Ruben Xaus, manager of the new Cannes team…
The revenge this weekend in Jerez promises in these circumstances to be as hot as the first round: to follow naturally on MNC, stay tuned !
