It’s hard to know who the French bikers are: from the bad boy of the 50s to the quadra in a 21st century suit, a lot of oil has flowed under the bridges… An in-depth TNS Sofres survey for GEMA Prevention provides a clearer picture.

The behavior of two-wheelers on the road

Among all two-wheeler drivers, "being a good driver is above all knowing your limits and staying vigilant"(59%), while 41% believe it is first"Respect the rules of the road".

58% of bikers and scooterists believe that motorists and riders of two-wheelers do not understand each other well, compared to 42% who think the opposite.

They are naturally in the majority to find that French two-wheeler drivers as a whole are good drivers (74%), but 26% of them have a bad image of themselves. This self-depreciation even rises to 39% among stressed people..

35% of all two-wheeler drivers consider that it is the scooterists who "globally present the most dangerous driving on the roads". 25% refer to motorists (on a par with drivers of heavy goods vehicles), 9% to mopeds and only 6% to motorcyclists.

In the end, bikers and scooterists are a very slight majority to feel "safe from the risk of accident"when they are on the handlebars (51% including 48%"rather safe"and 3%"in total safety"), versus 49% who feel insecure (44%"rather insecure"and 6%"in total insecurity").

A rather suspicious entourage

On the other hand, the view that the close entourage (family and spouse) of two-wheeler drivers has on their practice is mainly judged "negative"(44%) against only 37% of"positive look"and 19% indifference.

The deviations most commonly accepted by all drivers of motorized two-wheelers are non-compliance with safety distances (63%, although 71% recognize that it is "systematically dangerous"), the lack of suitable clothing (62%), the overlap of a white line to double (60%) and a small 110/120 on the departmental (53%).

On the other hand, 56% never walk up the lines on the right, 61% never use reserved lanes such as emergency lanes or bus lanes (country people, perhaps?), 64 % never allow themselves a small peak at 150/160 on the motorway, 67% never "slalom between the lines of cars at high speed", 73% always stop at the stop sign, 78% never drive on sidewalks, 79% never drive after having had two glasses of alcohol, 86% never take a wrong direction and finally 91% always wear a helmet.

Regarding speed ("110/120 on departmental"and"150/160 on highway"according to the questionnaire), it is judged"systematically dangerous"by 65.5% of stressed, 51.5% of transgressors, 48% of moderates, 47% of serene and only 19% of enthusiasts. The latter, on the other hand, are 96% to be considered as"systematically dangerous"not wearing a helmet (against 95% among stressed people, 93% among calm and moderate people and only … 76% among transgressors!).

The lack of suitable clothing is judged "systematically dangerous"by 56% of enthusiasts, 44% of moderates, 41% of transgressors, 30% of serene and 24% of stressed.
