A new survey paints a portrait of two-wheeler drivers in France
It’s hard to know who the French bikers are: from the bad boy of the 50s to the quadra in a 21st century suit, a lot of oil has flowed under the bridges… An in-depth TNS Sofres survey for GEMA Prevention provides a clearer picture.
Moderate, passionate, serene, transgressive or stressed: the game of 5 families
"Behind this average portrait, the study made it possible to identify five typical profiles drawing as many distinct driver families", explains TNS Sofres: compared to the 2004 study, the study carried out for GEMA Prevention was based more on driving style to identify 24% of"serene"22% of"passionate", 20% of"moderate", 18% of"transgressive"and 16% of"stressed out".
The stressed (16%)
For "Stressed" Defense executives (who have "an acute awareness of danger"), the two-wheeler is a"utility and stress generator" allowing to "reduce travel times and easy parking". This is the adopted family of" commuters ", in which we logically find a majority of scooters (77%) and small engines (58%), but also a high proportion of women (47%) and recent drivers (34%).
Their average age is 36, they live in Paris (34%) and have been driving a scooter of less than 125 cc for less than two years. The two-wheeler is their main means of transport, they mainly use it to go to work and ride less than average.
The stressed person buys his scooter for "limit car trips and be more independent"but is required"strict compliance with the highway code". Besides the stress, he feels a"lack of attention from motorists", a certain "awareness of possible accidents" and one "feeling of insecurity"… made worse by the fact that he is not wearing"no suitable clothes".
His preferred behavioral errors are not wearing suitable clothing (80%), not respecting safety distances (59%), overlapping white lines (55%), going up in lines (49%) and traffic on reserved lanes (48%).
The serene (24%)
For "Serene" Buddhas (who display "a sense of control and responsible conduct"), the two-wheeler is an object"practical, an alternative to the car but also a source of pleasure". There is a majority of bikers (61%) but also a significant proportion of scooters (39%).
This is the group most representative of the average two-wheeler driver, with 79% men and an average age of 39 years. The serene person buys his two-wheeler for "avoid public transport and park easily", by imposing"strict compliance with the highway code"without committing any particular offenses. His only notable misconduct is the non-wearing of suitable clothing (64%), the non-respect of safety distances (56%), a small white line on occasion (51%) and more rarely a peak at 110/120 on the departmental (47%).
"Synonym of escape", the two-wheeler gives him"absolute control of the machine, the pleasure of driving, relaxation, well-being, the feeling of freedom and responsibility towards others".
The moderates (20%)
Among the voters of Modem "Moderates", the two-wheeler is above all "a pleasure and relaxation object, a source of well-being". Unsurprisingly, they are mainly bikers (64%) but there is therefore a surprising proportion of 125 (43%). The use of their two-wheelers is predominantly leisure and vacation and they demonstrate"experience, awareness of the danger and respect for the rules".
This group is made up of 75% men, again with an average age of 39 years. It is provincials (91%) who drive large-capacity motorcycles and 125s, but for whom the car remains the main means of transport. They only use their two-wheelers for short trips and therefore have an average annual mileage lower than the average.
The moderate buys his bike "for leisure, holidays and by passion for motorcycles". For him, driving a two-wheeler"it can be learnt" : it is "a pleasant leisure during the weekend or the holidays"which imposes"strict compliance with the highway code". He experiences the pleasure of driving, relaxation and well-being", but laments the "lack of attention from motorists" because he has"awareness of accidents that could happen"He does not commit"no specific offense"and did"never had an accident".
A good student of road safety, the moderate is still loose from time to time on the non respect of the safety distances (65%), the white lines (61%), the non wearing of suitable clothing (60%) or the 110/120 on departmental (48%).
The transgressive (18%)
Within the “Transgressive” couriers, we find a majority of scooters (55%) and displacement less than 125 cc (50%). The motorized two-wheeler is for them a "utility object (alternative to public transport)"which allows them to"win time"(main motivation). They do a"intensive use"of their two-wheelers but commit to"many offenses typical of city driving"(directions prohibited, no helmets, sidewalks, alcohol, no hitchhiking, slaloms, reserved lanes, etc.)
Among these urban rebels (27% are Parisians), we find 33% of women. Their average age is 33 and they are generally rather well-off (CSP +). The transgressive mostly drives scooters under 125cc, generally for less than two years. The two-wheeler is his main means of transport which he often uses for professional purposes, hence the high annual mileage.
This ugly villain does not wear suitable clothes (69%), does not respect the safety distances (67%), goes up the lines (57%), rides the white lines (54%), drives 110/120 km / h on departmental roads (53%), travels on reserved lanes (52%) and sidewalks (49%), does not stop at the stop sign and slaloms between queues (47%), takes prohibited directions (45 %), hit a 150/160 on the highway (42%), drive after drinking (39%) and as if that weren’t enough, don’t wear a helmet (32%) !
The enthusiasts (22%)
Finally, among readers of the "Passionate" Site, the motorcycle is an object "pleasure, passion"lived like"a sport in its own right". With a "strong sense of belonging to a community", they are experienced and make a"intensive use"of their grindstone, without spitting on a small arsouille occasionally ("risky driving (speed)", specifies the study). Of course 93% of them are bikers … but are not the remaining 7% of scooter riders also and above all former bikers ?
The average enthusiast is a 40-year-old male (84%) provincial (89%). He drives large displacement motorcycles on long journeys, does not hesitate to go on weekends or on vacation with his accident which therefore collects a high annual mileage..
Passionate friend, know that you are buying a motorbike "by passion"and you ride to experience the"pleasure of speed, a feeling of power and freedom, the pleasure of driving, relaxation and well-being". You pull a bit short drives at 150/160 km / h on the motorway and at 110/120 km / h on secondary roads, intoxicated by your feeling"to belong to a community"because the motorbike is for you"synonym of escape".
In terms of conduct, you willingly admit a little scandalous 110/120 on the departmental (83%), you ride the white lines like Perceval his Round Table (76%) and you do not spit on a 150/160 on the highway to the occasion (72%). Like the others, you do not respect the safety distances (69%) but you put on your helmet (98%) and you wear suitable clothing (57%).
