New BMW sales record in the world thanks to the R1250GS … or G310 ?!
Like BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce cars, the "Motorrad" branch of the German group set a new world record in 2019 with 175,162 sales of motorcycles. The increase of + 5.8% can be attributed to the new R1250GS… or the G310R and GS, launched in 2017! Explanations.
In 2018, BMW Motorrad barely broke its world sales record: the propeller brand had marketed 165,566 motorcycles and maxiscooters compared to 164,153 the previous year. However, last year (2019, yes already!), Sales rose significantly with + 5.8%.
"2019 was another very successful year for BMW Motorrad, despite a number of challenges," says its director Markus Schramm, very satisfied to set a ninth consecutive record and grateful to "our customers around the world for the great confidence that they granted us again in 2019 ".

- Motorcycle sales 2018 :
Of the 175,162 BMW motorcycles sold around the world in 2019, a third came from the GS. Or the four GS to be exact, since the old R1200GS and Adventure were gradually replaced by the new R1250GS and Adventure equipped with the flat-twin Quickshaft.
The Munich maxitrail took the opportunity to beat its own record: "more than 59,000 units" invested our streets, our roads and our paths last year against "more than 51,0000" in 2018. We could thus consider that the BMW Motorrad’s progress is mainly due to this new model…
But at the same time, BMW says it has sold "more than 20,000" G310 R and GS around the world in 2019 … against 11,595 in 2018! So which of the big GS or the small G310s allowed the German brand to grow by nearly + 6%? ?
Overall, the R series equipped with the new Boxer (GS, RT, R and RS) came close to 90,000 sales in 2019 against 84,500 sales in 2018. They therefore still represent the bulk of sales – and income! – from BMW, even if "the mid-range was able to confirm its strong position with nearly 29,000 models sold, a majority of which are F750GS and F850GS".
In 2020, the new F900R and XR will be responsible for increasing BMW’s presence in segments better exploited by their Japanese and European competitors. A good way to reach the ambitious goal of 200,000 motorcycles sold in 2020? For this, "Behème" will have to boost its sales by + 15%…
The Bavarian manufacturer, on the other hand, ignores the – against? – performance of the S1000 (18,773 units of R, XR and RR in 2018), in particular that of the S1000RR thoroughly revised for the 2019 season but seriously penalized by recall campaigns upon its release…
BMW in 2019: big successes and a false start…
"We are also proud of our success in racing in 2019", prefers to mention Herr Schramm. "The first podiums in the World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK) and the successful entry into the World Endurance Championship (EWC) confirm our confidence in the new BMW S1000RR".
Not a word either about the K1600 (8,306 units sold in 2018) which are particularly popular with American bikers. A clientele that BMW is targeting as a priority thanks to the "launch of the BMW R 18 (which) will certainly be one of the highlights of the year 2020".
BMW Motorrad is very pleased to have succeeded in maintaining its sales in North America (15,116 units) "in a difficult market context". Further south, in Brazil, the milestone of ten thousand machines has been crossed: 10,064 exactly, which represents a jump of + 36.7%.
Another extra-European market in which BMW is growing strongly: China with 8,818 motorcycles and maxiscooters sold, ie "an impressive growth of + 16.6%" … but twice less than in 2018 (+ 35%).
On its national market, the main one, BMW is on the rise: to -10.5% in 2018 is followed by a + 10.4% in 2019. Its 26,292 sales of two-wheelers allow it to retain "its position as a manufacturer of the most efficient motorcycles on the German market ".
Across Europe, the Munich brand and its Berlin factory (which celebrated its 3 million motorcycles produced last April) increased their score by + 7%. The Germans retail 15,580 units in Italy (+ 10.4%), 12,607 in Spain (+ 13.3%) and 9,611 in Great Britain and Ireland (+ 4.2%). And in France ?
- MNC Premium :
MNC Premium readers – who, we thank them all, actively support their favorite motorcycle journal, its independence and its impertinence! – know that 2019 was a brilliant year for the German manufacturer with 17,791 machines registered in France, an increase of + 13.7% following a slight decline in 2018.
Finally, the site notes that BMW has sold 145,815 electric or hybrid vehicles … with four wheels, under the propeller logo – which changes in 2020 for a refined and transparent version – or Mini. The German group is pleased to have passed the milestone of half a million vehicles sold.
BMW’s first world market for electric two-wheelers, France has seen C-Evolution sales plunge by -19% (687 immates). French disinterest in electricity? No, rather the consequence of the arrival on the market of smaller and less efficient scooters, but less expensive…
