Summer will be a show at Ducati: new Panigale (V4?) On the way !
Ducati is raising the temperature – already scorching! – from this summer 2017 with a teaser video that gives an appointment for July 7 to discover an important novelty in the Superbike category. Will this new Panigale be powered by the new V4 engine derived from MotoGP that the Bologna brand would consider installing on its production motorcycles? The bets are open !
The rumor of Ducati’s possible desire to switch to V-four on its large-displacement sports motorcycles comes from the CEO of the Italian brand, Claudio Domenicalli himself: interviewed this winter during the presentation of the official MotoGP team, the leader then explained that he was considering using the V4 developed for MotoGP on his production Panigales.
“It’s an engine (the MotoGP V4, Editor’s note) which is very reliable, light and compact: we are seriously considering offering it to regular customers of the brand”, then developed the big boss adding that this project would not take the form of a limited series like the one launched in 2006, but would lead to a “production motorcycle, top of the range, but sold at a reasonable price”.
The end of the 90 ° twin on Ducati sports motorcycles ?
In other words, the future Ducati Panigale could well abandon the cult 90 ° twin dear to the brand in favor of a V-four: a total revolution for the brand, which has already traded – with mixed success – its tubular trellis frame against a monocoque element from the 1198 to 1199 Panigale in 2012 !

This hypothetical production V4 would however retain its desmodromic distribution, as in the MotoGP GP17s currently piloted by Lorenzo and Dovizioso, with two consecutive victories for "Dovi" (in Italy and then in Spain). A nice calling card for this potential “Panigale V4”, who would find in this engine a welcome supplement to respond to the overpowering “4-legs” of its Japanese rivals in World Superbike, Kawasaki in the lead !
A Panigale V4 or a new special edition V-twin in Laguna Seca ?
Could it be this new motorcycle that Ducati will present on July 7 during the American round of WSBK in Laguna Seca, or only its new V4 engine? Unless an ultimate version of Panigale powered by a “good old” twin is unveiled (way and its 215 hp for 167 kg!), So as to pay tribute to this architecture with which Ducati and its fans are historically linked ?
Another possibility, not to be ruled out despite the promise of a new chapter suggested by this video teaser: the presentation of a "simple" version of Panigale during the Californian stopover of the WSBK … and a wait postponed until the show of Milan (Italy) this fall to find out whether or not Ducati will dare the V4 !
