XL Sport: a Panigale engine in a Volkswagen !

At first glance, the concept XL Sport proposes to place a – relatively – small motorcycle engine in a particularly light and aerodynamic car chassis. Volkswagen and Ducati could they create "Das Auto" together ?

At the start of the year, the automaker Volkswagen unveiled its car of the future: the "XL1", a brand new ultra-light, ultra-compact, ultra-economical, ultra-expensive and … four-wheeled hybrid model: no enough to feed the "Research and Development" section of the Journal moto du Net !

But a few weeks ago, Ferdinand Piech (grandson of Ferdinand Porsche) presented a concept called "XL Sport", based on the chassis of the XL1 and fitted with the engine of the Ducati 1199 Panigale….

The Italian twin will replace the original twin engine: a 0.8 liter turbo diesel twin cylinder developing 48 hp allied to a 27 hp electric motor which together provide, according to the designers, an average consumption of 0.9 l / 100 km and CO2 emissions limited to 21 g / km.

These latter values ​​would skyrocket on the sports version of the "XL", but the top speed (160 km / h on the hybrid) and acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h ("in just 12.7 seconds"on the hybrid still) would be significantly improved by the 190 horsepower and 123.7 Nm of the Italian 1.2 liter.

The size of the car – shorter and thinner than a Polo, lower than a Boxster – would be retained, but the rear axle would be widened in order to give this car unlike any other a handling worthy of its "sound. " last name.

The already featherweight 795 kg – thanks to the reinforced carbon fiber and aluminum bodywork! – should decrease, the Superquadro weighing less than the TDI assembly, electric motor and 5 kWh lithium-ion batteries. Conversely, serious efforts will have to be made to lower the noise level of the Ducati machine in the small cabin. !

Like the XL1, the XL Sport would only accommodate two people, a handicap that sports cars – and Smart ones – easily surpass. The price would undoubtedly be the main obstacle to the realization of this somewhat crazy project: the XL1, manufactured this year at 250 copies, is offered at 111,000 euros. How much for the XL Sport ?
