Motorcycle movie: Barry Sheene will rise from the ashes
Thirteen years after his disappearance, Barry Sheene is preparing to make his comeback – hopefully! – in the cinema: a biopic of the double GP 500 world champion will soon be released in cinemas. Trailer and teasers…
The British favorite motorcycle rider
After James Hunt – and Niki Lauda, his great rival in Formula 1 -, Barry Sheene! The coolest, the most respected, the most adulated and the most charming of English motorcycle riders is indeed entitled to his film too. !
To Anglophone and / or Anglophile MNC readers who would have missed it – and those who no longer remember or those who simply want to immerse themselves in this glorious year 1976 -, the editorial staff advises to watch the documentary "When Playboys ruled the World"(read again)…
This time, it is not a question of a documentary but of a biopic adapted from the book "Barry: The Story of Motorcycling Legend"Written in four hands by Barry’s teammate and great friend Steve Parrish and MotoGP commentator Nick Harris.
The Australian Rod Morris, one of the two producers of the film, tells how, while talking with a young director, the idea to edit this film came to him: "we were both curious to see how Hollywood director Ron Howard would portray a mostly European story in Rush (the Hunt and Lauda biopic, precisely, Editor’s note) ".
"Lost in my thoughts, I started to say to my friend: "there is another great figure in motorsport whose history has never been … ". He immediately interrupted me: "Barry Sheene! " I was amazed because the person I was speaking with, although British, was only in his early twenties, around 9 when Barry died".
"Are you kidding me", would then have retorted his interlocutor …"Everyone in the UK knows who Barry Sheene is! Even today, the cops who stop bikers for speeding ask them: "Who do you think you are? Barry Sheene ?! ".
The two-time 500cc Grand Prix world champion still occupies pole position in the minds – and hearts – of the British, far ahead of Danny Kent, Sam Lowes, Cal Crutchlow or even John Surtees, Mike Hailwood, Phil Read, Joey Dunlop , Carl Fogarty "and Co". For this reason – and many others – Barry deserved to be reborn from the ashes….
In the trailer published five months ago on the film’s official YouTube channel (see next page), we saw his Suzuki, his favorite No.7 and his shimmering colors, the famous hole in the chin bar of her helmet for smoking ugly brunettes, pretty blonde hair, Donal Duck, a charming cleavage, cigarettes and a stealthy middle finger !
A teaser then recalled the moving tribute that Valentino Rossi himself had paid to the English pilot – exiled in Australia since the 80s to try to calm his arthritis – during the memorable, precisely .
The film should be released in time to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Barry’s first world title – without it, it will celebrate the double in 1977! Until the exact release date, Barry Sheene fans are entitled to a new "teaser"…
These are excerpts from interviews conducted by the producers during the preparation of the shoot. Huge names in motorcycle speed describe the favorite rider of the British … and many bikers around the world, even today.
