1985: the beginnings of the myth…

Just as Kawasaki celebrates 25 years of the Ninja saga (read our), Suzuki celebrates the 25th anniversary of its prestigious line of GSX-R, initiated in 1985 with the revolutionary 750 and followed by many variations … Flash back !

In September 1984, the launch at the Cologne Motor Show of the GSX-R 750 almost eclipsed the excitement caused a little earlier by the arrival of the RG 500 Gamma, this fabulous two-stroke with a "square" engine (both cylinder banks are placed one behind the other on different vertical planes) which immediately gave a hard time to the stars of the time, Yamaha RDLC and Honda NSR in the lead.

But the presentation of the new GSX-R 750 is really making headlines and although a GSX-R 400 is already present in the Suzuki catalog, mainly for the Japanese market, the "Gex" 750 is indeed considered to be the instigator of one of the most charismatic and renowned sports lines…

At the time, the Suzuki GSX-R 750 stood out from its competitors by a very powerful 16-valve four-cylinder 4-stroke engine (99 hp) and advanced technical solutions: air-oil cooling (the famous SACS for Suzuki Advanced Cooling System), perimeter frame in cast and extruded aluminum, aerodynamic research suggested by the unique presence of enveloping fairings, etc..

Very inspired by motorcycles engaged in endurance racing, the GSX-R 750 lays the foundations for the Replica era: the aluminum frame – whose behavior lends itself to criticism – is then a rarity reserved for "real" racing machines , while the 230 km / h announced by Suzuki make the common bikers dream…

Success was immediately apparent, both in sporting terms (podium at the 1985 24 Hours of Le Mans) and in terms of sales: sales greatly exceeded Suzuki’s estimates! This success, never denied for a quarter of a century, allowed Suzuki for several years to thread the titles of world endurance champion like pearls and to exhibit its technical know-how on the entire GSX family.
