Juan Pedrero Garcia (5th in the Dakar motorcycle 2013) was remembered to everyone’s fond memories by winning the fourth stage of the 2014 edition of the "King of rallies". At the end of a particularly selective marathon special (352 km without assistance), the Sherco rider finishes ahead of the KTMs of "Chaleco" Lopez and his former leader, Marc Coma.

Juan Pedrero Garcia (5th in) was remembered to everyone’s fond memories by winning the fourth stage of the 2014 edition of the "King of rallies". At the end of a particularly selective marathon special (352 km without assistance), the Sherco rider finishes ahead of the KTMs of "Chaleco" Lopez and his former leader, Marc Coma.

A difficult Dakar

We had to play it fine so as not to make any mistakes during this long fourth stage, both technically (management of the tires, in particular) and in terms of navigation. As Marc Coma points out, "it’s not that it was difficult today, it was rather that it was easy to make a mistake".

Until now quite discreet since in Rosario, Juan Pedrero Garcia has returned to the front of the stage by winning this selective special: an excellent way to come out of the shadow of Marc Coma, of whom he was the water carrier for several years at KTM.

Pedrero, however, remains more than an hour and a half behind the provisional leader in the general, Joan Barreda Bort.

Victim of an annoying navigation error and then a small crash, lost precious time at the end of the day, finishing the stage in sixth place with almost 14 minutes late.

"Really, everything was looking good", regrets n ° 3, "but at the end of the stage I apparently took a bad note of the road-book. It was 70/80 kilometers from the end of the stage. special and I took the wrong direction. We will take a closer look, because I read and reread the road-book yesterday and it indicated this direction ", annoys the Spaniard…

"Then I entered a rocky area: it was hard and I was nervous", continues Barreda who was thrown off by his motorcycle in the middle of a setting worthy of the American Wild West..

A "rodeo" which he would have gone well, not only because of the time lost but also because he now suffers from a slight pain in his hand…

Always at the forefront and ultra-regular, Marc Coma places his pawns by playing consistency, in order to preserve mechanical and physical.

But this "defensive" strategy does not fool anyone: the KTM official will inevitably ramp up and make the powder speak, especially now that one of his main rivals has bitten the dust !

Temporarily "short-circuited", Despres retrograde to 6th place

Author of several small navigation errors at the start of the course, Cyril Despres then lost precious time following an electrical failure caused by his Iritrack security system (a device connected to the GPS beacon installed on each motorcycle, which sends a alerts in the event of a fall and allows the race director to communicate with the driver).

"Nine kilometers from the finish, my Iritrack support broke and damaged electric wires: the bike stopped, and I tinkered, tinkered, until I found the problem. In this case, it was a short circuit ", relates the defending champion, whose experience acquired during his professional debut as a mechanic allows him to save the furniture..

"Do I look discouraged? No, I’m not: we are at the 4th stage and there are 13", recalls the new top Yamaha rider, 16th at the finish of the stage at 42 minutes of the winner.

“The day I give up, I had better go home. It’s a big setback, it’s true, but I love this race, and I know it’s never over. ‘Yes I could have given up, but I’m still here. The bike is working and I’m in great shape ".

"Cyril, he should never be dismissed," said his former teammate, Marc Coma. "He has won this race five times: he knows what it is. In the Dakar, anything is always possible." It is not Sam Sunderland who will contradict the Spaniard: after having masterfully won the second stage, the Honda rider had to throw in the towel yesterday due to a mechanical failure…
