The Spaniard Marc Coma consolidates his grip on the by winning his second special during a ninth stage marked by the abandonment of the Franco-Malian Alain Duclos … Second, Cyril Despres grapples but is still 2h30 behind his former teammate at KTM.

Breakdown and abandonment for Duclos

422 km long, the motorcycle route of the ninth stage joined Calama and Iquique (Chile) via an impressive alternation of terrain and topography. After 200 km of downhill and fast tracks, the bikers then "got into the hard", as the title holder, Cyril Despres underlines..

"That is to say tracks with fesh-fesh (very delicate soft sand to gauge, editor’s note), bumps and stones, which is rather difficult for the wrists, hands and arms in general" , says the official Yamaha.

Then loom the magnificent dunes of Iquique, with their summit which seems impassable when viewed from below. A unique show that Alain Duclos will unfortunately be deprived of: at km 217, Sherco n ° 22 stops suddenly and will not start again…

Probably the victim of a broken valve spring, the Nîmes motorcycle refuses to restart despite the care given by its pilot, then fourth overall. Impossible for him to be helped out by the assistance: the regulations prohibit it in special! Duclos must resolve to wait for his team-mate Francisco Errazuriz (58th overall), who agrees to tow him "with a string" to the checkpoint located at km 260.

But the adventure will end there for Alain Duclos, because in front of him now stretch the dunes where any towing attempt is doomed to failure … Death in the soul, Duclos sees Errazuriz and his competitors leaving for the assault of the mountains of sand as it signifies its abandonment to the organization. A very hard blow for the native of Bamako who had brilliantly started this Dakar…

Coma without false note

Meanwhile, far ahead, Marc Coma continues to deliver the same perfectly executed score he plays every day: the KTM official blows victory to Joan Barreda Bort, alongside whom he has covered a large part of the special..

First declared second, the Honda rider will then be demoted to ninth place following a 15-minute penalty imposed for speeding in a control zone. Infuriating, even though by the Spaniard’s admission, Coma was once again a cut above.

"I started very hard from the start, but Marc accelerated and joined me in the dunes at the end of the stage. I’m happy because I can’t do more", he summarizes.

The n ° 3 retains second place overall, 55 minutes from Coma and almost an hour ahead of Jordi Viladoms. Barreda demoted, the second step of the podium goes to Cyril Despres, again author of a very good special with his Yamaha. A performance all the more interesting as the Frenchman had to manage his end of the course to save fuel: "on arrival, I think I must have a liter left", laughs the n ° 1..

Thanks to his efforts, Cyril Despres climbs back to 8th place overall but he is still 2h30 behind the leader. Except (big) navigation error or breakage (s) at the head of the race, his chances of victory therefore appear to be more than slim…

Finally, who signs a superb seventh place during this ninth stage !

The multiple champion of trial (13 world titles) and enduro (2 world titles) is ahead of big names like the French Olivier Pain (10th) and David Casteu (15th, but injured in the shoulder).

Overall, the Honda rider is in a very flattering 16th position despite a one hour penalty. Note also the fine performance of our colleague Thierry Traccan, editor-in-chief of Moto Revue, currently ranked 53rd overall on a CRF 450 Rally. Go "Trac" !
