Joan Barreda won the eighth stage of yesterday ahead of Campbell, Jakes and Bianchi. The 183 km long special between Salta and Tucuman (Argentina) trapped many competitors due to the weather conditions. This is particularly the case of Olivier Pain, forced to hand over the reins of the event to his teammate David Casteu.
Bread gets bogged down …
Even if it was shortened because of the significant precipitation that fell before the start, the special of this eighth and last day of racing of the week was very difficult….
A few bikers found themselves trapped in a flooded river, while others made serious navigation errors with the stopwatch.
It was at Km 122 exactly that the heading mistakes started: badly inspired, the leading group lost half an hour in circles in a river. Among them, the winner of, Kurt Caselli, but above all the leader of the general classification, the Yamaha rider Olivier Pain !
"Chaleco (Francisco Lopez, Editor’s note) left in a valley a little too early", says, disappointed, the pilot of YZF n ° 9. "He came back right in front of me. We were good. And then, I don’t know: we probably should have turned a little more to the right but with the rain it was difficult. That’s how it is. It’s me who lose the biggest. I knew of course that it was not necessarily won ".
"But the second week will have other surprises in store. The objective is not to hurt yourself and to be in Santiago anyway. But it’s still a long time", relativizes Pain who ends this day in 77th position. . A bad operation that took him from first to fourth place in the provisional general classification.
Thanks to this collective "gardening" session, Barreda, Casteu and even Despres were able to return very quickly to the front of the special. Joan Barreda takes the opportunity to secure his third stage victory with his Husky in front of Johnny Campbell’s Honda.
Not really expected at this position, the American takes advantage of this result to climb from 77th to 67th place in the provisional.
"A good day, because after the worries of the last few days, my hand is getting better and better and I’m starting to relax on the handlebars," explains Barreda. "I quickly caught up with the first ones, who were coming back from their navigation error and I attacked even harder, but in the last kilometers I made a small navigation error in my turn, which allowed David Casteu to surpass me ".
Ivan Jakes (3rd), Pedro Bianchi Prata (4th) and Vincent Guindani (5th) also play the "surprise guests" by ending this day full of twists in front of the defending champion, Cyril Despres.
Penalized by mechanical problems the day before yesterday, the KTM official was able to bounce back on this 8th stage thanks to the solidarity of another Katoche rider who obligingly agreed to exchange his engine with him.
In return, the Frenchman gets a 15-minute penalty overall, where he drops to fifth position 24min26 behind the leader before the day of rest scheduled today..
"Anyway the bad day is behind me!", Smiles the four-time Dakar winner.
"I knew him yesterday, when I found myself without 5th gear in a fast special, I lost time, but I was still lucky because my friend Marek Dabrowski gave me his engine and took mine last night at the marathon bivouac ".
"So today I was able to ride normally, and I could have made a really good shot, because I hesitated to take the track on the right at the entrance to the rio, but all the tracks went to the left, so I finally followed them and then I ran into everyone walking in circles, looking at each other. So when it’s like that, I only look at my roadbook and the landscape ".
The big winner of the day is therefore David Casteu who finishes the stage in sixth position, 14min13 behind the leader: thanks to this position and to the underperformance of the leaders – including Pain and Lopez -, the 38-year-old Yamaha rider finds himself propelled to the top of the provisional general classification of this first week of racing.
He is ahead of Ruben Faria, Despres’ water carrier at KTM, Francisco Lopez (KTM), Olivier Pain (Yamaha), Cyril Despres (KTM), Ivan Jakes (KTM) and Jeremias Israel Esquerre (Honda). The first Husqvarna, that of Botturi, is classified 12th overall, while the first Gas Gas, Suzuki, Sherco and Husaberg only appear at the 28th, 38th, 42nd and 54th positions respectively..
As usual, today, Sunday, is a day of rest for all the competitors of this 35th Dakar. The race resumes Monday: stay tuned !
