Dakar moto 2015 – stage 7: Barreda loses the front and the lead !

After a first week spent in the dust of the leaders, Paulo Gonçalves raised his voice and offered himself his first victory at the 7th stage of the Dakar 2015. Bad pick on the other hand for Barreda, whose overall lead fell by half following a fall and a breakage of its handlebars…
The passage in Bolivia tests the bikers
For this stage between Iquique (Chile) and Uyuni (Bolivia), the competitors had to face a ground made slippery by rain and a hailstorm at the end of the special. To make matters worse, the cars that had left the day before had transformed the route into a bumpy quagmire difficult to negotiate on a motorcycle …
Added to the altitude, these parameters put the bodies and mechanics to the test, forcing the pilots to draw on their replenished reserves on Saturday during the rest day..
The main victim of these conditions, the Spaniard Joan Barreda Bort slipped forward at km 200 of the special, a fall from which his Honda recovered with the left handlebars snapped. Courageously, the leader of the provisional finished the next 120 km driving with one hand and finished 10th 6min13 behind the winner of the day, Paulo Gonçalves.
"These are stages where you have to be very careful. But even like that … On the road book, a danger was indicated. But without specifying the level: 1, 2 or 3. I saw quite far away and I started to brake at 100 meters. But with the mud the bike slipped and I hit, "said Barreda, whose lead dropped from 12 to 6 minutes in the provisional classification..
"The bike also stopped at another time and I lost another 4 minutes," laments the Honda official, already slowed down by injection problems at the end of last week. "Then I went all the way, with one hand! But there is no problem. We are a great team. We will solve this. There, I will shower, eat a little and then I will repair ".
Barreda starts the marathon stage with one hand …
Because the incident and the breakage are extremely difficult for Barreda, who has to repair his motorcycle alone since the bikers have entered a special marathon, that is to say a part where they have no technical assistance.
This implies that the first Honda rider will have to retrieve a handlebar on the CRF450 Rally from one of his less well-placed teammates to keep his chances of winning the Dakar. A logical option given Barreda’s place in the standings, but necessarily hard to digest for his teammate "sacrificed" for the leader !
The Honda clan can however rejoice with the victory of Paulo Gonçalves, winner of his first stage in 2015 with 14 seconds (!) Ahead of Marc Coma. Brilliantly overcoming all the pitfalls of this special, the Honda official consolidated his third place overall behind Barreda and Coma and above all reduced his delay to 11 min.
"It was a very difficult stage. I caught up with the riders who were in front of me and I stayed with them because we had good speed", relates "Speedy" Gonçalves. "It started to rain in the middle of the stage, it was very slippery and dangerous ".
"About fifty kilometers from the finish, I also started to have a very bad headache. But I arrived, without any problem for the bike. Now I will have to recover, and I also have a little work anyway because the bike is full of mud".
In the absence of assistance, motorcycle riders are in fact forced to ensure their own daily maintenance of their motorcycle, such as cleaning with karcher, checking levels and removing-cleaning the air filter. Operations to which may also be added repairs related to breakages suffered during the day !
The young people go on the offensive
Very good day also for the beginner Matthias Walkner, third of the stage thirty seconds behind the winner ahead of Pablo Quintanilla and Toby Price. A trifecta of "rookie" which is a pleasure to see and which perhaps foreshadows the rise of the young generation.
At Yamaha, the 2015 Dakar continues to test the tuning forks: Frenchman Michael Metge crashed and finished 39 minutes behind the winner.
It is once again the Italian Alessandro Botturi who finished first Yam ‘driver at the finish, in 11th position 19:18 from the winner.
Alain Duclos ends up in 24th place in his Sherco. For safety, the tricolor changed the engine of his motorcycle before starting the marathon stage, which costs him 15 minutes in the standings..
Overall, Duclos remains ninth, however, but his gap to the leader climbs to 1:05:31…
