Dakar moto 2017: report, declarations and classifications of stage 4
The fourth day of the Dakar motorcycle 2017 will have been fatal to several favorites … The hecatomb begins with the title holder, Toby Price, forced to retire after a heavy fall on his KTM when arriving in Bolivia. It continues with the one-hour penalty imposed on Honda officials, including provisional leader Joan Barreda !
All the ingredients were there to make this fourth stage of the Dakar 2017 thrilling, between San Salvador de Jujuy (Argentina) and Tupiza (Bolivia). First interesting element: its 521 km route, including 416 km of special, marked the entry into the third country visited, after Paraguay on the first day and Argentina the two previous days. Over the next six days, the average altitude will be 3,500 m, two days more than in 2016: a first in the Dakar.
Everyone has their own technique to fight against summit sickness: some have trained at altitude while others use oxygenated chambers to simulate efforts at height. Others, like David Casteu, manager of Sherco TVS, adopt the local method: chewing coca leaves! But on the mechanical side, the penalty is the same for everyone: the engines clearly lose power and make motorcycles heavy and less responsive..
However, entering the Andes Cordillera is accompanied by many crossings: an additional difficulty of which Marc Coma, sporting director of the event, who has spent a lot of time in reconnaissance to find new new, narrower and more demanding tracks. Result: bikers find themselves facing impressive dunes, something quite unusual at these heights (see videos below) !
Price pays a high price…
All these elements did not slow down Toby Price (KTM) and Joan Barreda (Honda), launched in a splendid mano a mano which lasted. The defending champion sent a lot of gas to catch up on the previous day’s delay during stage 3, brilliantly won by his rival HRC. A blow to me, a blow to you: their duel kept us in suspense until the passage in Bolivia, under the gaze of Matthias Walkner (KTM), Michael Metge (Honda) and Pablo Quintanilla (Husqvarna).
But after 371 km of special, Toby Price while leading by a short header in front of "Bang Bang" Barreda. Evacuated by the medical team, the Australian is … It’s the end of dreams of a double for the n ° 1, the first non-European winner of a Dakar (below during a fall in Morocco). KTM accuses the blow while a transfer by helicopter takes its champion to La Paz (Bolivia), where he will be operated. The royal road opens for Joan Barreda, the most victorious active driver in the Dakar with his 14 stage victories, including the one signed on Wednesday.
The HRC official, who did not tremble in his role of opener, then seemed on course to double the bet … but was finally overtaken on the clock by Matthias Walkner! Price’s teammate took advantage of a slowdown by the leader in a big dune for him. The n ° 16 signs his second stage victory in the Dakar and continues the series of different winners in 2017, after Pedrero on the, Price on the and Barreda on the !
The French Michael Metge (Honda) and Xavier de Soultrait (Yamaha) are respectively third and fourth ahead of Pablo Quintanilla’s Husqvarna, while Pierre-Alexandre Renet and Adrien Van Beveren are in the Top 10. In any case, this is the classification before qu ” a new twist intervened in the evening: the race management announced that four Honda riders were fined one hour, including the leader of the provisional Joan Barreda !
Honda downgraded by one hour !
Following an investigation, the race management evokes "refueling outside the authorized zone": the sanction falls heavily on Barreda, Goncalves, Brabec and Metge, the French water carrier from Barreda who had achieved a superb special (3rd).
Honda immediately appealed against this decision, but to no avail: the commission officially validated it, thrusting the drivers concerned into the depths of the standings. Joan Barreda goes from 2nd to 32nd place (!) Of the day, while his water carrier Michael Metge drops from 3rd to 39th! The disaster materializes at the level of the provisional general classification, which escapes Barreda while he led comfortably: the Spaniard falls from first to seventh, with 41’41 behind.
It is quite simply a major turning point for the HRC, which legitimately sought the final victory following the good start of its leader and the injury of Price. Following the reshuffle of the classification, it is Pablo Quintanilla (third last year) who takes the lead in the rally on his official Husqvarna. The Chilean rider precedes the KTMs of Matthias Walker and Stefan Svitko, respectively first and third in the special.
Following the downgrading of the Honda, the French Xavier de Soultrait also goes back to second place on his Yamaha, while his compatriot Adrien Van Beveran ends the day in 7th place..
After deduction of the time I finished 2nd of yesterday’s stage and I am 6th overall. Too happy to be in Bolivia
– Xavier de Soultrait (@Soultrait)
Less luck, however, for their teammate Alessandro Botturi, forced to retire following a fall 30 km from the finish. Immediately taken care of by the doctors, the Italian suffers from a "small" head trauma.
Fifth stage under high voltages
The fifth stage begins this morning in a heavy atmosphere, between the shock felt at the announcement of the withdrawal of Price (see the hot reactions of Goncalves and Walkner below) then the amazement on learning of the downgrade of the Honda. The HRC pilots obviously approach the day with enormous bitterness, between disappointment and anger at their situation..
This fifth day of racing takes place between Tupiza in Oruro (Bolivia) and has 692 km, including 447 km of special. The pilots will continue their acclimatization to altitude on the Altiplano … at least, those who remain in the race: out of 144 at the start in Asuncion (Paraguay), there are only 115 this morning at the starting point (DSS).

Dakar moto – stage 4: statements
Matthias Walkner (KTM): "It was easier starting eleventh today… At the start of the race, however, I didn’t feel very well, the navigation was complicated and there were a lot of drivers lost and stuck here and there. At km100 I have started to feel more comfortable. I was still far from thinking that I was going to win this stage. I’m happy for the win, but the most important thing today is what happened to Toby. C ‘It’s a dirty trick, I hope it’s OK. I’m not going to talk about a goal today. Joan is going very fast and we are not even halfway through the rally. "
Sam Sunderland (KTM): "The start was very frustrating because the navigation was tricky and I made circles to find my way. We had little information and they were not very clear … But that’s what the organization wants to make the race harder. After this first part, it was easier. I was able to gain ground from the leaders until the pit stop. I had a good pace but I had lost too much time at the start due to navigation. It’s frustrating. I’m still happy to be here after the frustration of last year. You have to take the race day by day. It’s dangerous. We got up at 3:00 in the morning to send 430 km ".
