Dakar moto 2017: report, statements and classifications of stage 3
Untouchable during the third stage of the Dakar motorcycle 2017, Joan Barreda reverses on his Honda the trend imprinted by the outgoing champion Toby Price (KTM). Despite a small penalty, the HRC official signs the 14th stage victory of his career and takes the lead of the provisional with already more than 10 minutes in advance.
Of all the motorcycle riders in activity, Joan Barreda is the most victorious in the Dakar: with his third stage yesterday, the native of Castellon (Spain) brings his balance of success to fourteen. And yet, since his, his best result at the finish was only a seventh place in .
Fast, determined but sometimes inconstant and hesitant in navigation, the n ° 11 has long lived in the shadow of the two heroes of the previous generation: Cyril Despres and Marc Coma, true “ogres” of the Dakar for ten years. And when it’s not the competition, it’s bad luck that stands in its way:, Barreda broke the engine of his factory CRF450, leaving Toby Price to claim the first victory of a non-European in the Dakar.
"Observe, control and attack"
This year, the headliner of the HRC approaches the rally in a different way: "I want to observe, control and take advantage of situations to attack", explains Joan Barreda. L’ibère fulfilled this objective perfectly from the start of the third stage, 780 km long, between San Miguel de Tucuman and Salvador de Jujuy (Argentina). Having gone ball in the lead on the first part of the timed special, the n ° 11 took a quarter of an hour ahead of his rivals.
Toby Price, in the first off-piste portions at altitude (4500 m), accuses the blow with more than 20 minutes before the neutralization placed before the second part. Aware of his advantage, Barreda managed his lead without slackening despite the cold, the rain and even a hailstorm at the end of the course: from 36 ° C at the start, the temperature dropped to 0 ° C in the heights. !
In the end, the Honda official crossed the finish line with an abysmal lead of 12’29 over the KTM of the British Sam Sunderland, solid second. Pierre-Alexandre Renet took third place at 15’30, ahead of his Husqvarna teammate, Pablo Quintanilla. This third position is the best result of "Pela" in the Dakar: a very good start for the Norman, however hampered by headaches linked to the altitude..
Despite a one-minute penalty for speeding, Joan Barreda recovers the reins of the provisional classification ahead of Sunderland, Goncalves and Quintanilla. A meteoric comeback as "Bang Bang" Barreda was 8th at 5’30 au! Toby Price downgraded to fifth place, 16’19 behind the leader: "we all have a bad day on the Dakar, it was mine", confesses the Australian who hopes it will be the last !
Contrasting day for Yamaha
For Yamaha, the results are quite mixed: thanks to his 6th place on the stage, the Frenchman Adrien Van Beveren is starting a good climb in the standings, from 12th to 6th place in the provisional. But the three-time winner of Le Touquet is no less than 22 minutes behind the leading man after only three days of racing … Admittedly, Barreda’s demonstration shows that nothing is certain on these first stages, but he will have to ride to come back…
More worrying for the Blues: Xavier de Soultrait retrograde from 4th to 13th place in the provisional, after a difficult day ended 14th. The Yamaha official is 31’18 behind the leader. Finally, let’s mention Laia Sanz’s 17th place on stage, 34’42 from Barreda on his KTM. The Spaniard finished just behind Joan Pedrero’s Sherco, to whom the first stage returned following the! The n ° 19, 21st in the provisional, is the first of the nine female drivers entered this year.
The fourth stage of the Dakar motorcycle 2017 takes place between San Salvador de Jujuy (Argentina) and Tupiza (Bolivia). This day has 521 km including 416 km of special and marks the entry into the third country visited, after Paraguay on the first day and Argentina the two previous days. The average altitude over the next six days will be 3,500 m: a first in the Dakar. Additional difficulty: the pilots will have to compete against dunes, something quite unusual at these heights !

Dakar moto – stage 3: statements
Joan Barreda (Honda) : "It’s a step that was written into my plans. Yesterday, I lost a little time and it’s a shame. But today everything went well. It’s the dynamic that I have adopted: control and take advantage of situations to attack. The race is still long. And the differences made on this 3rd stage are still nothing. This year everything will be different. And this strategy of control and attack is, I believe, the maid".
Sam Sunderland (KTM) : "It was a day placed under the sign of navigation, especially on the first part. There were traps. I tried to take my time, but when you are lost you are lost, it has nothing to do with driving too fast. After twenty kilometers I joined Toby who had left nine minutes before me. It was really difficult to find his way. The second part was better. In this kind of stage, the starting position matters a lot. It’s the third day, there are many more left. ".
Pierre Alexandre Renet (Husqvarna) : "I’m doing a good result, I’m just a little surprised. The stage was long and the altitude is having an effect… my head hurts. I hope I’ll get used to it, because it’s is quite violent. At the start of the stage the navigation was quite difficult, but I applied myself well and then I attacked. It went perfectly, but if we miss out on a way-point, it quickly becomes very complicated to find the right direction. It was a big disappointment to fall so quickly last year. But I feel much better prepared, and it starts rather better this year, even if we are only at third day. We’ll see how it evolves ".
Pablo Quintanilla (Husqvarna) : "The stage was fast. We climbed very high. At more than 4000 m and it felt. The body does not respond in the same way. I admit that it was not a good day for me. . I lost time but I’m happy to finish anyway among the best. Joan (Barreda) passed me. I couldn’t follow him. Then at the refueling I didn’t see him. For him. , yes, it was a good day ".
Toby Price (KTM): “Today’s record is not great, but it’s only at the third stage. You can’t win a rally by leading the race from day one to the last. Everyone has a right to their bad day. . For me it was today, I hope there will be no more. "
David Casteu, Sherco TVS team manager : "Joan made a small navigation error at the start of the stage, he turned fifteen minutes to find the right course, like many drivers. Then he attacked and finished the stage well. Tomorrow (Thursday), he will start 16th place. Nothing is lost, he is in good shape and very motivated. The bike is perfect despite the altitude of 5000 meters ".
"Starting from the bottom of the standings, Adrien made a superb comeback and fought in the dust. He will start tomorrow from a better position (32nd in the stage and 68th in the provisional, Editor’s note). As for Aravind (the third pilot aligned in the structure, of Indian origin, Editor’s note) he suffered a big fall and was repatriated by helicopter. A broken shoulder suggests … His dream of Dakar ends there ".
