Winner of his first stage during the third day of the Dakar motorcycle 2016 (read our), Joan Barreda Bort was fined one minute for speeding on the road a few hours after the finish … The Honda official therefore downgrades from first to fifth place in the day’s standings and loses control of the provisional in favor of KTM rider Stefan Svitko.

Barreda’s downgrade directly benefits his teammate, Kevin Benavides, who clinches his first Dakar stage victory.

The Argentinian is followed by another Honda rider, Paulo Goncalves, and by the surprising Antoine Meo, moved from 4th to third place following the downgrading of Barreda.

Note that the new leader of the general, Stefan Svitko (photo above), also received a penalty of one minute for excessive speed on the link course during the second day.

To believe that the favorites are struggling to contain their desire to become the new number 1 in the Dakar, a position left vacant following the successive withdrawal of the two previous leaders, Cyril Despres then the outgoing champion Marc Coma. Be careful, however, not to confuse speed and haste, as Stefan Peterhansel worried, who keeps a watchful eye on motorcycle racing: "there is a risk of leaving on the hats of wheels", fears "Monsieur Dakar" (6 motorcycle victories, 5 in a car), "I cross my fingers so that there is no accident. The pilots should not hurt themselves"…

Overall, Svitko now precedes Benavides, Barreda, Goncalves, Duclos, Walkner and Quintanilla. The first Yamaha, that of Helder Rodrigues, appears in 14th position, more than 8 minutes from the leader.

Dakar moto – stage 3: Barreda and Honda take action

Honda-HRC official Joan Barreda Bort signs his first victory on the Dakar 2016 (his 14th overall) during the very fast third special drawn between Termas de Rio Hondo and Jujuy (Argentina).

Benavides and Gonçalves, who follow him less than a minute, complete a Honda hat-trick. 

In lack of rhythm during the mud of the second stage, Joan Barreda made the powder speak during this third day, followed closely by his teammates in the winged crest.

Having started in front following his victory yesterday, the young Toby Price (KTM) was dropped off from the first checkpoint by the "Honda armada", made up of the Spanish Barreda, the Argentinian Benavides and Portuguese Gonçalves. On arrival, the trio of CRF450 Rally is separated by only 52 seconds !

KTM official Toby Price, 3rd last year, for his part finished the stage in an anonymous 37th place, 8 minutes behind the leader, plunging to 10th place overall now led by Barreda ahead of Svitko (5th in the stage) and Benavides.

Price is not the only one to suffer the demonstration of the Honda riders since Ruben Faria (Husqvarna), second at the start this morning behind the Australian, finished 26th, conceding nearly 6 minutes to the winner of the day. The Portuguese slipped to eighth position in the provisional, almost 4 minutes …

The KTM-Husqvarna clan can however take comfort in front of the superb 4th place of Antoine Meo, the five-time world enduro champion converted this year to rally-raid. The French took the opportunity to move up to 13th place overall on his official KTM, two positions ahead of Helder Rodrigues’ factory Yamaha, only 18th in this 3rd stage.

Note also the very good performances of two other French: the rookie Adrien Van Beveren, impressive 7th (24th provisionally) just 2min from the winner on his Yamaha and the veteran Alain Duclos (44 years old), ninth on the stage unless 3 minutes on his Sherco and 5th in the provisional.
