The Chilean body in charge of heritage has demanded compensation of 300 million pesos ($ 570,000) from the National Sports Institute (IND), host of the Dakar Rally, for the damage caused to archaeological sites by the passage of the rally in january.

The National Monuments Council (CMN), in a report cited yesterday by the daily El Mercurio, identified damage, to varying degrees, caused to 56 of the 111 heritage sites visited after the rally, and a loss of archaeological data in 13 of them in the Quillaga region, in the north.

Four sites in particular were damaged to more than 50%, according to the records of the CMN, which refers to lithic workshops, or stonework, as well as traces of passages of caravans dating from pre-Hispanic peoples. The secretary of the CMN, Oscar Acuna, wished "that in the same way as was done for the previous rally, compensation be paid for damage to heritage", without specifying the amount paid after the 2009 edition. also proposed that a detailed report on archaeological sites at risk, which had been drawn up last November, be this year brought forward to August to be able to be integrated into the route of the 2011 rally and the roadmaps of the participants.

The 2010 Dakar, contested in Argentina and Chile, saw more than 370 vehicles travel in its Chilean part some 4,050 km in the desert north of the country. The 2011 edition, for the third consecutive year, will again take place in these two countries.
