European GP - Fabio Quartararo, fallen at the European GP, gives up the MotoGP title -

Fabio Quartararo cedes 23 points at once to Joan Mir in the provisional MotoGP classification following his fall and his 14th place in the European GP … Disappointed by his mistake, the young Frenchman has little illusions about his possibility to be titled against the consistency of his rival Suzuki… MNC declaration and analysis.

Fabio Quartararo, Yamaha Petronas SRT (11th in qualifying and 14th in race) : "A driver fell in front of me at the start of the race and I also fell trying to avoid it. This kind of fall happens quickly in these conditions … Unfortunately, we lose points in the championship over one race which did not necessarily announce itself as our best but where we thought we could do better ".

“My feelings were much better in the dry on Sunday, although not quite as I would have liked yet. I think we could improve my feel and our race pace. There are a few things that we will have to try next weekend. with that in mind. There are two races left and we still have good possibilities to finish the season well. ".

MNC analysis : At only 21 years old, Fabio Quartararo expresses his emotions without filter and instantaneously. The Nice man can go from a state of intense jubilation to deep sadness, as when he understood this weekend that the 2020 title was slipping away at the same time as the front of his M1 in turn 8….

"I am very sad and disappointed: the championship is not over, but the objective now is to secure second place", he admits as his gap over leader Joan Mir has fallen from 14 to 37 points … The scenario could not be worse, since he fell while his opponent Suzuki, regular, won his first MotoGP success !

  • MNC of November 4:

A bitter-tasting cons-performance for the excellent "20-French", moreover victim of a problem with the trim adjustment system of his Yamaha after his fall. The M1, like all MotoGP now, has in fact a device allowing it to be "seated" on the rear at the start but also at the exit of turns. Goal ? Gain traction and limit pitching.

Fabio finds himself under the threat of the formidable Alex Rins: the two opponents are level on points in the provisional with 125 points, even though the Suzuki has the consistency that the Yamaha lacks. Not to mention reliability too, as Rossi again suffered a breakdown and Viñales had to leave the pits for having exceeded his engine quota (5 blocks per driver).

It should also be remembered that the Iwata brand is subject to a sanction in the constructor and team rankings for having used non-compliant valves during the first race in Jerez (Spain), which fuels debates and criticisms – even scathing accusations of cheating…

Yamaha and its riders under pressure

Not especially the best conditions to progress serenely at the highest level of motorcycle competition, especially for a young prodigy like Fabio, one of whose – rare – faults is precisely his sensitivity and his difficulties in ignoring all kinds of pressures.

Because Fabio Quartararo undoubtedly has the speed and ambition necessary to win the cup: the proof with his three successes and his four pole positions. But he lacks that consistency that would help him to remain more hermetic to difficulties: the French has finished beyond the Top 5 six times, including three times outside the Top 10.

Seventh in the Czech Republic, 8th then 13th in Austria, Fabio also fell in Misano (Italy) before finishing his first wet race at Le Mans in 9th position. Then during the catastrophic stage of Aragon, he let slip big points with his 18th (!) Then 8th places. Unsuccessful for the title, of course, but already enormous for its young age: France has never shone so much in the premier category !

Concerning these races at Motorland, Fabio reminds us: it is a problem of pressure in his front tire which is at the origin of this round which was experienced as "the worst race of my life". Remember that Fabio had been the victim of too much pressure which seriously affected his sensations..

M1 affected by packet racing ?

As is often the case in this kind of situation, everyone passes the buck to each other: Michelin assures us that the error comes from the Petronas SRT team, while Fabio assures us that "the team and I wanted to start with less pressure".

This problem of pneumatic pressure also begins to reappear repeatedly at Yamaha, as an explanation of the chronic inconstancy of the M1. The cause ? The rise in temperature of the front tire which inevitably occurs when the pilots are in packs because the exhaust of the preceding motorcycles "heats" the rubber.

"I think the biggest problem we had today was the pressure in the front tire," said Franco Morbidelli, first Yamaha rider in Valencia in 11th place. "When we ride in the peloton we notice pressure issues and we can’t fight like we want to".

The Yamaha would be very – too much? – sensitive to this parameter which does not occur during breakaways. However, the six victories won this season by Yamaha (three for Fabio, two for Morbidelli and one for Viñales) were signed after a solo sprint: CQFD ?! Not sure: Rossi has never complained about this phenomenon when he often struggles in the peloton to come back up … To be continued on MNC: stay tuned !
