Although a little disappointed to finish the French Grand Prix in ninth position, Fabio Quartararo draws a positive assessment of his first MotoGP race in the rain: the young Frenchman avoided the traps set by the Le Mans track to deftly increase his lead in championship lead ! Debriefing and analysis.

Fabio Quartararo, Yamaha-SRT (1st in qualifying and 9th in race) : "We were on the grid to start the race when it started to rain, which was quite disappointing … We knew that the dry conditions would have been better for us. It was a difficult race but I’m happy because we never gave up fighting. In the last lap, when Joan [Mir, editor’s note] passed me, I was able to pass him again ".

  • MNC special file :

"It was important to score as many points as possible in this condition and we even managed to slightly increase our lead. We’ll see what will happen in Aragon, but I’m really happy with my first race in the wet because that Could have been worse. Being on pole position at home with the fans was really special, even though they were only 5000 they really helped me. ".

MNC analysis : Untouchable in the dry during practice and qualifying at Le Mans, Fabio Quartararo, on the other hand, knew he was in difficulty in the wet: his first practice session ended in 18th place had demonstrated this unequivocally. The future official Yamaha rider still lacks the experience to familiarize himself with the limits on a wet track.

"El Diablo" therefore urged himself to be cautious when the rain thwarted his strategy on the starting grid, aware of having a lot to lose in the event of an error: "this is the first time I have thought of the championship in the race ", he confesses. "Even if some say that nobody wants to win this championship (, editor’s note), everyone wants to win it!".

Moreover, like all Yamaha riders, Fabio was in trouble at the start of the race on a partially wet track, conditions which reflect the traction concerns of the M1. The Yam ‘were struggling to get their grooved rear tire up to temperature, a less penalizing phenomenon in the second part of the race when the rain came back to spray the asphalt continuously.

But it was still necessary to stay on its wheels, which many much more experienced pilots did not know how to do: Cal Crutchlow, Bradley Smith, Tito Rabat were surprised, just like Valentino Rossi who went to the mat in the first sequence. Ditto for Fabio’s teammate, trapped in the 19th lap…

"I made a mistake on turn 4 and lost the front," regrets Franco Morbidelli, who had fallen behind when he got off the track to avoid being dragged down by Rossi’s crash. "It’s a shame because I think the eighth or ninth position was within our reach".

Rossi congratulates Quartararo on his management of the championship

"Fabio did a very good job because these conditions made us suffer on the Yamaha, but he remained calm", analyzes Valentino Rossi. "He didn’t make any mistakes and took some very important points for the championship. I also think his victory in Barcelona was great because the conditions were not easy. In my opinion, Fabio will be very strong until ‘at the end of the year".

Something to comfort the excellent "20 French", who struggled to hide his disappointment to finish 9th in front of his audience 16.687 sec behind the winner Petrucci. From a sporting point of view, "El Diablo" certainly did not achieve the desired objective, but in terms of accounting the operation was successful since it increased its lead by two points over Joan Mir, his closest rival in the championship (115 pts Vs 105).

Another reason for satisfaction: none of the podium riders – Danilo Petrucci, Alex Marquez and Pol Espargaro – are threatening in the title race. Only Andrea Dovizioso, third in the provisional, regained some ground with his 4th place at Le Mans, while Maverick Viñales finished behind the Frenchman who was also the first Yamaha rider to arrive. !

The next MotoGP race will take place in Spain with the Aragon Grand Prix scheduled for next Sunday. It will be followed the following week by the unprecedented Grand Prix of Teruel on the same circuit.
