French GP - French GP FP3 practice: Quartararo shines in the sun of Le Mans -

Fabio Quartararo makes the powder speak a few hours before qualifying for the 2020 French Motorcycle Grand Prix while the sun is making a welcome return to the Le Mans circuit (72). The leader of the MotoGP championship is ahead of Miguel Oliveira and Franco Morbidelli, while Johann Zarco sets the seventh fastest time in free practice 3. Report and results.

Jack Miller – the fastest yesterday on a partially wet track – is the first to warm up on the Bugatti-Le Mans circuit, where the sun advantageously replaces the cold rainy gray of the day before. Which means that the times of these FP3 – logically faster than Friday – will serve as a reference to access the QP2.

The future official Ducati rider was quickly replaced by Franco Morbidelli, while Alex Rins was trapped on his Suzuki. The return of sunny conditions – but still cold with only 10 ° C in the air! – smile to the Yamaha, traditionally at ease on the Le Mans track: Fabio Quartararo does not take long to climb to the front, as well as Maverick Viñales and Valentino Rossi.

Pol Espargaro is also doing well on his factory KTM at the start of the session, just like Danilo Petrucci. Alex Marquez created a surprise by moving up to 4th position behind Quartararo, Morbidelli and Espargaro, before losing control of his official Honda in turn 3. When it doesn’t…

At mid-session, Fabio Quartararo lined up laps as fast as pearls and firmly the head, tickling the bar of 1’33. The young French – leader in the provisional with 8 pts ahead of Joan Mir – passes under this mark 26 minutes from the checkered flag, with a loop of 1’32.974.

This devil of "El Diablo" then has three tenths ahead of his teammate Morbidelli and half a second over Viñales: and to say that he assured last night that he did not want to take any risks for the championship! Reason why Fabio has also preferred to ignore the discovery tests of the Portimao circuit (Portugal) this week..

Hecatomb at Le Mans !

The last part of this session is marked by the rise in power of the official Ducatis, in particular that of Andrea Dovizioso who flirts with the first place before being blown away by Morbidelli. Joan Mir in turn accelerates to recover second place behind the Italian-Brazilian.

Fabio Quartararo returned to the lead in 1’32.509 ten minutes from the checkered flag, while most of the drivers returned to the boxes to switch on soft tires with the aim of making a time. Fabio improves again in 1’32.319, before returning to the pits: good pick for the French since no one will be able to do better !

Fall of Valentino Rossi 4 minutes from the end of the session, following a loss of the front in turn 4. The Italian was in third place at this time. He was joined a few moments later by Jack Miller, who suddenly flies off into an impressive high side on turn 8. The Australian, then 2nd, gets up unscathed..

Then it was Joan Mir’s turn to fall forward in turn 3, followed by Stefan Bradl on the Honda! A real massacre which reflects the still trapping nature of the Le Mans track at the beginning of October: the asphalt is much cooler than in May, the date on which the French GP usually takes place..

Proof of this is the gap of 1.134 seconds which separates the best time signed this morning by Fabio Quartararo in 1’32.319 and the absolute circuit record held by Johann Zarco since 2018 in 1’31.185. We can bet that qualifying will bring its share of chronometric improvements as the sun will continue to heat up the track..

MotoGP qualifying will start this afternoon at 2:10 p.m. with QP1, followed by QP2 at 2:30 p.m. Stay connected !
