MotoGP riders explain themselves after the 2020 Aragon Grand Prix
The descent into hell of Fabio "El Diablo" Quartararo, the extraordinary remountada of Alex Rins, the new dimension of Alex Marquez, the award of the metronome Joan Mir, etc. Site looks back on the highlights of the GP of Aragon through the statements of the drivers… and some notes.
1st: Alex Rins, Suzuki n ° 42 (P10 in qualifying)
"I’m full of emotions! I really struggled at the start of the season, but the team and I never stopped working really hard. We just won and it’s amazing! was not sure if I could win starting from 10th on the grid, but I did it! As I chased the riders in front of me, I felt I had a good pace and the bike was running really well. really relaxed despite having (Alex) Marquez and Joan (Mir) close behind, and I managed to handle the pressure, it will be hard to do this next weekend, but I will definitely do my best! It’s great to be back on the top step of the podium! "
MNC Note: Pilot it like Rossi, back in the days! Indeed, the last rider to have won in MotoGP by starting beyond third place on the grid is the "Doctor": his feat dates back to 2007, during the Dutch Grand Prix. It was in Assen, where ten years later the n ° 46 won its 89th and last success in the premier class…
Like the oldest motorcycle Grand Prix, Alex Rins has always been better on Sunday than Saturday. The Suzuki official demonstrated it again yesterday by securing his third MotoGP victory despite a passable qualification. A great start, an impeccable race and a solid finish … Watching it evolve, you might think it’s extremely simple. Isn’t that the mark of a – future – champion ?
2nd: Alex Marquez, Honda n ° 73 (P11 in qualifying)
“Honestly, I didn’t expect to finish on the podium from 11th place but I was able to come back up. I ended up in a good position so we did what we could! I knew I could take good care of my tires at the end of the race. I enjoyed every overtake, but I was really at the limit with the front tire. It’s still great to get back on the podium and do it on the dry, we really showed our potential all weekend. We still have to work on qualifying, but we can build on what we achieved today. I want to thank once again the Repsol Honda team who believe in me, support me, guide me and never give up They gave me an amazing motorbike and I loved the whole race ".
MNC Note: That’s it, Alex Marquez has made a name for himself in the category! Supported by his brother in the official Honda Repsol team, the reigning Moto2 champion proves to his detractors that he does indeed deserve the handlebars of his factory RCV…
On a motorcycle reputed to be very temperamental and delicate to handle, the n ° 73 managed to climb twice in a row on the podium: on the "stop-and-go" and soaked track of the Bugatti at Le Mans, then on the wavy and dry circuit of Aragon. By qualifying better next Saturday, could the "rookie" Alex win his first GP in the premier class? It would be a great feat, accomplished in MotoGP (4-stroke) by Pedrosa in 2006, Lorenzo in 2008, "Marc-quez" in 2013 and Binder this year. !
3rd: Joan Mir, Suzuki n ° 36 (P6 in qualifying)
"I’m really happy! All the hard work we put in every race weekend has paid off and I’m now leading the championship. In a way, that doesn’t mean much because there are four races left and a lot a lot can still happen, but it’s a good situation at the moment. In fact, I expected a little more from today‘s race because at the start my pace was really good and I was handling well everything, but in the last laps I started to struggle a bit with the front tire. I had plenty of grip in the back, but in the end it was better to finish third rather than take a risk. looking forward to next weekend and I hope I can get an even better result ".
MNC Note: With Alex Marquez now, Joan Mir is at the top of the list of riders able to add their name to the list of winners in MotoGP 2020. To win next Sunday in the second race of Aragon (the "GP of Teruel "officially), he will have to save more on his front tire, soft … or put on a medium, more enduring ?
A victory would come at the right time for the n ° 36 driver of the Suzuki team, new "number one" in the provisional classification! Observers are indeed starting to criticize the fact that the young Spaniard (23) did not win a race while his main French rival won three. Undoubtedly the same who treated Nicky Hayden of grocer the year of his coronation against a Rossi at the top of his art !?
4th: Maverick Vinales, Yamaha n ° 12 (P2 in qualifying)
"I’m so happy I got off to a good start. I had a 0.7s lead over the peloton after the first lap, I was very happy. The soft tire up front also gave me good confidence this weekend. My problem was the rear. After five or six laps there was a lot of wear on the left side. I was wasting time in areas with a lot of left turns, but in the right turns I was pretty quick which was good. We got the most of the bike today. We have to work for next weekend. Our bike has its strengths and weaknesses We cannot reduce its weaknesses, but we can strengthen its strengths by working in the direction that is right for the Yamaha. The goal is to get back to the top next week and get into a faster pace than today. ‘Yesterday. At the end of the race, I was able to do fast laps again. I did these laps with my eyes closed. que thoroughly because I wanted to have the possibility of heckling Joan. I tried honestly, and it was good because now I know I have a little bonus in the last laps, I might need it in the next races ".
MNC Note: All too often, Maverick Vinales has spoiled an excellent qualifying and compromised a promising race pace by missing his start and sinking in the standings in the first corners or even the first laps of the race….
This time, the "Top & only Gun" of the official Yamaha team – in the absence of Valentino Rossi tested positive for Covid-19 last Thursday – took off perfectly from his second place on the grid. Unfortunately for him, a mysterious drop in power in the middle of the race earned him the podium which seemed reserved for the Spanish drivers: excellent finisher – like Rins -, Vinales finished a quarter of a second behind Mir !
5th: Takaaki Nakagami, Honda n ° 30 (P7 in qualifying)
"I’m quite happy to finish the best independent driver, it’s good to enter the Parc Ferme. It was a difficult race and it was hard to manage the tires, but we did our best and I congratulate Alex ( Marquez, who finished second): he did pretty well today and his performance was good. We will do our best to fight for the podium in the next race here in Aragon, but I’m already happy to this race. I want to thank my team, they have done a great job all weekend and we can be happy to finish fifth ".
MNC Note: They are now only two. Like his colleague Alex Marquez, Takaaki Nakagami has crossed the finish line in all of the 2020 races contested to date. "Stronger" even than the Spanish, the Japanese have always remained in the Top 10 at each meeting. Thanks to his 92 points conscientiously garnered, "Taka" even appears in the provisional Top 5.
To climb the standings and hope to play the title to the end, however, the No. 30 of the LCR team must imperatively score bigger points by climbing on the podium. He was only half a second away at the Andalusian GP (Jerez 2). This Sunday, he was two short seconds, a tenth of a second in the lap. It seems ridiculous, and yet…
7th: Andrea Dovizioso, Ducati n ° 04 (P13 in qualifying)
“Today we managed to get the best possible result considering our 13th place on the grid. Unfortunately we don’t have the speed to fight with the leading drivers, and maybe because of higher temperatures this Sunday compared to the last few days, the average tire did not perform exactly as we expected. We now have some data to look into ahead of the next race weekend, which will still take place here in Aragon. We hope that the weather conditions will allow us to start working properly, from the first free practice session on Friday ".
MNC Note: Furax against his team-mate "Petrux" who sucked his wheel in Q1 on Saturday afternoon and would have thus stolen his ticket for Q2, Andrea Dovizioso in turn had two hares of choice to track on Sunday: the Suzuki n ° 42 and Honda n ° 73 rushed in front of the front wheel of his Desmocedici !
Unfortunately for him, his recovery in the race was limited to six places, against nine for the two Alexs (Rins and Marquez). Seventh in this first race in Aragon, "Desmodovi" remains in contention for the world title. But beware next Sunday: during the three previous doubloons (Jerez, Spielberg and Misano), the n ° 04 Ducati always performed less well the second time…
10th: Johann Zarco, Ducati n ° 5 (P16 in qualifying)
“Aragon is a difficult circuit for me. On Saturday afternoon I gained confidence for the race on Sunday. It was a great race! I finished tenth with a good pace. I had a lot of fun and I also learned a lot ".
MNC Note: Author of a distant 16th place on the grid, then of a worrying 18th fastest time in the Warm-Up, Zarco struggled in Aragon … Johann Zarco’s supporters did not lead off when the red lights went out. Sunday at 3 p.m. But 42 minutes later, the atmosphere was more relaxed, if not festive.
Of course, tenth place and its five small points are absolute and for our two-time Moto2 champion, poor results. But the fact that the n ° 5 of the Ducati Avintia team passes the checkered flag less than ten seconds after the winner – who had to attack to the end – and in the wake of his red comrades Dovizioso and Miller – separated by the courageous Crutchlow – reassures both the guy and his fans.
18th: Fabio Quartararo, Yamaha n ° 20 (P1 in qualifying)
“It was a really weird race. We knew our pace was not the best but we weren’t expecting to finish there. I expected to be higher but we had a problem with the tire before. This is the first time we have used this tire, it was good for the first three laps, but the pressure got too high. It was impossible to ride, I had no feeling in the front. am disappointed because without this problem I think we could have fought for a better result. It will not be easy, but we will try to understand and prepare for next weekend, again here ".
MNC Note: Fabio Quartararo is at risk of jaw problems! Last Sunday, he had to shake buttocks teeth so as not to get trapped at Le Mans in the wet. On Saturday, he had to grit his teeth to overcome the pain due to his fall in FP3 and sign a new pole position. Ditto yesterday to try to score points … then look good in front of journalists !
Victim of an irremediable drop in the grip of the rear tire during the Warm-Up Sunday morning, "El Diablo" experienced a real ordeal in the afternoon … because of a concrete front tire! In the rhythm at the very beginning – third fastest time of the race in his 3rd lap – our tasty "20 French" could not prevent his race from turning sour. He has a couple of days to air out, before look for find a solution to your pressure problem and collect big points.
