GP d'Aragón - GP d'Aragon MotoGP 2020: Rins new winner, Mir new leader -

Fabio Quartararo’s pole was off … Well started, our tasty "20 French" ended very badly this GP of Aragon whose podium was climbed by three Spanish riders: Alex Rins is the eighth winner in MotoGP 2020, Alex Marquez confirms in the dry and Joan Mir takes the reins of the championship ! Report.

For the first time since 1999, the MotoGP race is launched without any champion of the category participating: Marc Marquez (very badly fallen in Jerez at the start of the season) and Valentino Rossi (fallen ill this week) will watch their comrades fight for victory, from home on their sofa !

Author of a fourth pole position this year, Fabio Quartararo has selected a medium tire at the front and a soft rear to aim for a fourth victory and increase his lead in the championship. The majority of the board chose the same erasers…

Due to their more tire-indulgent No.36 and No.42 Suzuki, Mir and Rins put on a soft tire up front, as did Vinales, Pol Espargaro, Binder and Smith. Conversely, Dovizioso, Petrucci, Miller and Bagnaia preferred to install a medium tire on the back of their Ducati (same for Curctchlow on his Honda).

Departure : Franco Morbidelli got off to a great start from first place in second row but widened in the bend and let his two – only – Yamaha colleagues pass: Vinales and Quartararo. Rins took off beautifully from his 10th place on the grid and is already fourth ahead of Miller, Mir, Nakagami, Dovizioso, Marqez and Petrucci. Zarco is 14th.

Maverick escapes slightly during the 1st round while Rins gains a place. The Suzuki official joins the two “satellite” Yamaha. Behind, Marquez (Alex!) Overtakes Dovizioso to gain eighth place. One lap later at the end of the straight line, the n ° 04 comes back in front but widens in the left double and starts in the 3rd lap still ninth…

Author of the best time on the track during the 2nd lap, Quartararo moved away from … Rins, passed in front of Morbidelli! Bagnaia crashed on turn 5 of the third lap and could not restart. The future Ducati official will have the opportunity to make up for it in a week at the Teruel GP … on the same circuit in Aragon !

Alex Marquez continued his strong start to the race, overtaking Takaaki Nakagami. The rookie – author of his first podium in the premier class seven days ago at Le Mans, in the wet – thus becomes the Honda leader. We can imagine Marc jumping in front of his TV when he saw his brother step into Miller’s aspi and get closer to the world Top 5 !

Leading the race from the first corner, Maverick is just a second ahead of our fabio, challenged by Alex (Rins). Suzuki n ° 42 follows Yamaha n ° 20 like its shadow and takes advantage of a tiny gap in the last curve of the 5th lap to take second place !

Alex (Marquez!) Continued his formidable comeback, overtaking Miller on the 6th lap. The Australian took advantage of a better top speed in the long back straight to propel himself in front of the Spaniard, but the more incisive Honda entering the curve regained the advantage just before to climb to 7th heaven to start the 7th lap.

Unlike Rins who quickly reached the backsplash of the M1 in Vinales, Quartararo slows down and is caught by Morbidelli and Mir. Always a little too wide in the final curve of the layout, our championship leader opens the door to Franco … and Joan who overtakes the two Yamaha at once. !

A lap later, Rins in turn went on the attack right in the middle of the final double left. The Suzuki seems to have a solid front end at the entry of a curve, an impressive grip on the angle and a phenomenal traction. Vinales can only bow … and worry because the second GSX-R is just behind him !

Quartararo’s ordeal continues in the middle of the race: with a flagrant lack of grip in the corners, Fabio has to abuse his front tire to resist Nakagami’s comeback. The Japanese n ° 30 nevertheless took advantage of a new "largesse" from the French n ° 20 in the last curve to steal his sixth place … In the front row, Miller, Dovizioso and Crutchlow await their turn…

Far ahead, Rins is half a second ahead of Vinales, Mir … and Marquez who is aiming for a second consecutive podium, in the dry this time! The reigning Moto2 champion who sees Mir pass in front of Vinales at the very end of the 13th lap, attacks on the first braking of the 14th lap !

Quartararo continues to downgrade: just after his – our – compatriot Zarco, it is Petrucci, the Espargaro brothers and Binder who overtake him with disconcerting ease! Miguel Oliveira and his KTM Tech3 deliver the final blow by depriving "El Diablo" of the last point. Fabio’s counter may get stuck at 115 points…

There are eight laps to go and the leading trio rolls a few lengths away. In fourth position, Vinales suffers less than Quartararo certainly, but can no longer claim his place on the podium. Not at the regular in any case: he is two big seconds from Marquez who keeps pressing Mir !

The "brother of Marc" who selected a medium tire at the front (against a soft one for the two Suzuki pilots) throws his RCV n ° 73 inside the GSX-R n ° 36 in the final curve of the 18th round. With five laps to go, Alex finds himself in Alex’s aspiration … Sorry, Marquez is now threatening Rins for victory !

As fast as Marquez at the end of the race, Nakagami is in sixth place riding his own Honda LCR. But all eyes are logically on the factory Honda: slower at the start of the layout, the n ° 73 puts more and more pressure on the Suzuki n ° 42 … and on its tires, too. !

Victim of a pretty heat at the very end of the 21st lap (a beautifully controlled high-side start), Marquez loses contact on Rins and strengthens the next braking, at the end of the short pit straight. Rins on the contrary, does not commit the slightest mistake and starts the last lap with several steps ahead of his only rival..

Mir is dumped, so much so that the potential new leader of the championship finds himself at the mercy of Vinales in better shape! In front, Rins whips his Suzuki to keep Marquez at bay. He wants a little lead to attack one last time the long straight back…

No.42’s plan worked without a hitch: Rins won his first victory this season, the third of his career in the premier class. He also becomes the ninth driver to win in ten races after Quartararo (3x), Binder, Dovizioso, Oliveira, Morbidelli, Vinales and Petrucci !

Exceptional second at Le Mans in the wet last week, Alex Marquez confirms with this flamboyant second place in the dry in Aragon that he is no longer a simple "beginner" in the category, but a new contender for victory! The ninth maybe, next Sunday ?

MotoGP championship point (s)

Joan Mir climbs on the third step of this 100% Spanish podium, also coveted by Vinales who finishes in the wheel of his compatriot! The n ° 36 also and especially reaches the first place of the provisional classification: a first for a Suzuki pilot, since the "sacred" Kanny Roberts Jr in the year 2000 !

Young and talented Mir has 121 points – just ?! – in 10 races, against 115 for the young and talented (!) Quartararo, 109 for the former nugget of the official Suzuki Vinales team, and 108 for the future ex-driver Ducati Dovizioso.

Alex Rins who pocketed the 25 points of the victory took seventh place in the provisional, occupied again this morning by Jack Miller (8th in the race behind his colleague Andrea Dovizioso). Alex Marquez now has the same number of points as Brad Binder: with 67 points, the first two "rookies" are on the threshold of the World Top 10…

Tenth in this GP of Aragon, Johann Zarco cumulates 63 points and occupies 14th place, just behind the second Ducati official (Danilo Petrucci, 65 points) and just ahead of the nine-time motorcycle speed champion who will not be racing next week and will not will not be replaced (Valentino Rossi, 58 points).
