Catalan GP: Quartararo wins, Rossi wins
Fabio Quartararo returns to victory and leads the MotoGP World Championship at the Catalan Grand Prix thanks to a solid breakaway. The young Frenchman signs his third success in front of the Suzuki of Joan Mir and Alex Rins as Dovizioso, Zarco and Rossi finish on the mat… Report and results.
The MotoGP field takes place under an overcast sky and a fairly cool temperature, which encourages all the riders to set off on soft tires. Only Brad Binder, Aleix Espargaro, Pol Espargaro, Alex Marquez and Miguel Oliveira opt for a harsher solution (medium in the front and soft in the rear).

The start confirms the excellent form of the Yamaha this weekend: Franco Morbidelli springs like a spring from his pole position and dives in the lead in the first corner. The Italian-Brazilian is followed by Jack Miller and Fabio Quartararo, who is immediately passed by a very incisive Valentino Rossi for his return to the front row.
Behind, it’s a disaster: Danilo Petrucci almost fell under the wheels of Johann Zarco, who lost the front in a reflex maneuver. Unfortunately, the fall of Zarco drags Andrea Dovizioso into the gravel: the two Ducati riders are forced to retire, even as the French aims to regain the handlebars of the Italian next year…
Yamaha 1-2-3 at the front! has and for company!

For his part, Maverick Viñales gave us his usual catastrophic start to the race: the n ° 12 finished the second lap in sixteenth place while he started from 5th place! Conversely, the rise of Fabio Quartararo seems obvious: the young French driver is "easy" behind Rossi, whom he doubles when braking from the pit straight line at the start of the 6th lap..
The good French 20 is a bit faster than the n ° 46 on the go-around and a little more incisive under braking. Faster, what! Three laps later, Fabio confirms by overtaking his team-mate Franco Morbidelli in exactly the same place: he is now leading the race, for the first time since his double at Jerez. Spain definitely smiles at the future official Yamaha rider !
Rossi loses a great opportunity…
As Fabio’s M1 Petronas-SRT escapes turn after turn, his teammate Morbidelli makes a small mistake in the first turn which leaves the field open to Valentino Rossi. The experienced Italian – in a good rhythm since Friday – recovers second place…
crashes out of second place!!!
Heartbreak for The Doctor who was chasing for the lead!
– MotoGP (@MotoGP)
Unfortunately, the Doctor does not take advantage for long and loses the front in the first sequence of the circuit. End of hopes for a 200th podium for the Italian idol, who above all loses a golden opportunity to shine for his 350th start in the premier class. Really a shame to finish like this while his signing at Petronas is finally formalized…
Pol Espargaro and Miguel Oliveira will join him in the gravel shortly after on their KTM. Race to be forgotten too – one more – for Honda since Takaaki Nakagami signs the best performance of the winged crest in 7th place at 3.671 sec. Brave teammate Cal Crutchlow snatches 10th place despite fractured ankle and sore arm.

On the other hand, Suzuki performed a fine performance, who scored his first double on the podium since 2007, thanks to the excellent second part of the race from Joan Mir and Alex Rins. The two Suzuki Boys – who nevertheless started 8th and 13th! – were defeated in the last laps of Franco Morbidelli and Jack Miller, who finished 4th and 5th respectively after having long touched the podium with the tip of the glove.
Fabio Quartararo – whose lead rose to more than 2.5 sec – wins his third MotoGP race with an advantage of 0.928 sec: the young Frenchman is back in charge of the provisional classification !
MotoGP ranking point (s)
The excellent French 20 resumed the leadership he had temporarily occupied after his two victories in Jerez (Spain), before experiencing difficulties in the following three races and then falling at the GP of San Marino. Fourth the following week in Emilia-Romagna, Fabio confirms in Catalonia his return to the top !
NEW CHAMPIONSHIP LEADER! leads by eight points after a disastrous day for and !
– MotoGP (@MotoGP)
The Petronas-SRT rider, future Yamaha official to replace Rossi next year, is followed at eight lengths (100 points against 108) by the strong man of this second period: the Spanish Joan Mir, author of four podiums and a fourth place in five races on his Suzuki! His flawless recovery in Catalonia shows that he will have to be counted on, while his teammate Alex Rins seemed better equipped to play for the title. The n ° 42 admits, however, to still suffer from his operated shoulder at the start of the season.
Maverick Viñales for his part retrograde to third place in the provisional with 90 points, while the Yamaha were clearly above the rest on the Montmelo track. The Spaniard – 9th at 13.607 seconds – lets a great opportunity slip away, once again: his inconstancy must seriously worry Yamaha, which sees the M1 Petronas once again shining this weekend..
Dovizioso can’t do it, neither does Honda…
Same negative observation for Andrea Dovizioso, never in the game in Catalonia despite the long straight line yet favorable to the Ducati. The n ° 4 loses the reins of the classification … without ever having really convinced of his capacity to keep them. His fall caused by Petrucci and Zarco does not change much: Dovi – qualified 17th! – was unable to play at the forefront.
is OUT!
The World Championship leader didn’t even make it past Turn 2! |
– MotoGP (@MotoGP)
The Italian – still without handlebars for 2021 – fell to 4th in the provisional position ahead of Franco Morbidelli and Jack Miller, who signed the best Ducati performance this weekend with his 5th place. His teammate Franco Bagnaia, author of a good comeback although a little late, follows him in 6th position under the checkered flag and occupies 13th place in the provisional.
Takaaki Nakagami retains the rank of first Honda rider in the rider standings: the Japanese are 7th with 72 points, ie ten points scored in each of the seven races by the best rider in the winged crest. In other words, a disaster, which results in the fifth place in the manufacturer’s ranking below behind Yamaha, Ducati, Suzuki and KTM !
KTM, precisely, leaves Catalonia with the 11th place of Brad Binder as the best result and the double disappointment of having seen Pol Espargaro and Miguel Oliveira go to the mat. The Tech3 pilot – who could losing support from Red Bull – nevertheless retains his status as the first KTM driver in the championship, with his 9th place ahead of Binder and the disappointing Rossi.
