GP of Rep. Czech Qualifiers: Zarco on pole makes Quartararo crack !
Franco-French fight between Zarco and Quartararo this afternoon on the Brno circuit for the pole position of the Grand Prix of the Czech Republic: the n ° 5, perfectly at his ease on the Ducati, managed to subdue the young n ° 20 who got carried away to the point of fault in his last attempt ! Johann and Fabio will start on Sunday ahead of Franco Morbidelli. Report and results.
While Fabio Quartararo was strongly expected to clinch his third consecutive start since first place – despite some mood swings on Friday – it was finally his compatriot Johann Zarco who blows him the pole (itesse) at the end of a qualifying session played in the Czech Republic !

The n ° 5, in a very good rhythm since the beginning of the weekend, has perfectly been able to take advantage of the formidable acceleration capacities of his Ducati Avintia to stay at the forefront, even to the point of being inserted this morning. between the two Yamaha Petronas in FP3 !
This exciting performance was not just a flash in the pan: Johann turned the test into qualifying QP2 with a superb lap in 1’55.687 which will hold all his rivals in check, including Fabio Quartararo! The current leader of the championship, undefeated so far in qualifying and in the race, tried everything for everything on his last launched lap … but that did not pass: the n ° 20 lost the front in the tricky turn 13 !
Fortunately, Fabio got up safely and was able to join the parc ferme alongside his teammate Franco Morbidelli, who completes the front row of the Czech Republic Grand Prix. The Nice player from Nice will not fail to congratulate his elder on his pole: Johann had not appeared at such a party since his fifth pole signed with the Yamaha Tech3 at the 2018 Malaysian GP !
Zarco eclipses all Ducati riders !
The pole position of the Avintia rider, warmly acclaimed by his team, on the other hand triggered much less enthusiasm in the official Ducati team: teeth clenched, the directors of Ducati Corse barely greeted this performance, however all the more exceptional as made on an "old" GP19 !
And for good reason: all the Desmosedici are on the streets, on a route which nevertheless favors its V4 power! Petrucci is the second Ducati rider on the grid in 8th place with… 0.767 sec behind Zarco! Miller and Rabat follow each other sluggishly in 14th and 15th positions, while Dovizioso sinks to a worrying 18th place at… 1.347 sec from pole.
Without forgetting the forfeit on injury of Francesco Bagnaia, to whom Ducati would have just extended his contract for two years following his fantastic – but aborted – GP of Andalusia! Infuriating …
Brno owners urged to take out "Czech" notebook…
To explain their poor performance, the pilots point to a poor match between the new Michelin rear tire and the GP20: this aspect would be the biggest problem for Petrucci and Dovizioso, who no longer hide their disagreements with their employer. "DesmoDovi" and Ducati still cannot find common ground for 2021 and this poor qualification of the Italian will not fix his negotiating power …
There will be no fifth straight pole for !
The championship leader is down!

Another problem common to all the drivers this weekend: the poor condition of the asphalt at the Brno circuit, which has not been resurfaced for 12 years. Holes and bumps have multiplied in recent years, partly also because of the many car and truck competitions, while the grip has become lacking..
"It is unacceptable", judge Aleix Espargaro, often on the front line to castigate the infrastructures: "the track conditions are no longer up to MotoGP", he proclaims pointing to the many falls and the low pace for back up his words.
A track "more up to MotoGP"
The Czech track indeed trapped no less than 19 pilots on the single day of Friday, in particular in turn 13 where Pecco Bagnaia fell in free practice 1 (fractured tibia in the key) then Fabio Quartararo in qualifying. Cal Crutchlow, who recently had wrist surgery, was also at fault this afternoon…
A sweet moment for !
His first pole since Malaysia 2018, and Ducati’s first since Motegi the same season!

And the lap times are indeed far from the records: Johann Zarco’s pole in 1’55.687 is one full second behind Marc Marquez’s absolute record – again forfeited this weekend – in 1’54.596, signed in… 2016! Few of the circuits where such old references still hold, which reflects the deterioration of the bitumen.

"It’s obvious: the track deserves a resurfacing", sighs Valentino Rossi, who will try to climb to his 200th podium in MotoGP from 10th place. "But these works cost millions of euros and the owners of the circuit would not be able to pay them. And even less this season where we run behind closed doors, therefore without revenue coming from the tickets of the spectators: then , who pays? "asks the Doctor.
The MotoGP race of the 2020 Czech Republic Grand Prix is scheduled for tomorrow Sunday at 2:00 p.m. This third 2020 event in the premier category will be preceded by the Moto3 (11h00) and Moto2 (12:20) races: stay tuned !
